Weather in Minnesota this June has reminded many residents of something different, even familiar\u2014but that sense of \u201cnormal\u201d is increasingly outdated.<\/strong><\/p>\n Meteorologist Sven Sundgaard<\/strong> reflects on how our perception of climate<\/strong> has evolved, especially as summer weather patterns shift<\/strong>. While June<\/strong> felt<\/em> cooler and wetter to many across Minnesota<\/strong>, the data tells a more complex story<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Many in Minnesota<\/strong>, including the Twin Cities<\/strong>, believed that June<\/strong> was unseasonably cool. And while it’s true that the early part of the month brought cloudy skies<\/strong> and occasional showers<\/strong>, the final week<\/strong> changed the whole equation. It was during those last few days that temperatures rose<\/strong> and precipitation levels surged<\/strong>, pushing totals above the 1991\u20132020 norm<\/strong> in many areas.<\/p>\n This perception of coolness, despite measurable warmth, points to a deeper shift: we now expect June to feel like July<\/strong>. In recent years, Minnesota’s fastest-warming summer month<\/strong> has delivered early heat<\/strong>, often skipping over that slow seasonal transition. That hasn’t always been the case. Sundgaard recalls Junes in the 1980s and 1990s<\/strong> that often stayed dreary and cool until late in the month\u2014very similar to this year\u2019s early June<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Yet, despite those overcast days, this June ended up warmer than the average<\/strong>. In central and southern Minnesota<\/strong>, temperatures came in about 0.5 to 2\u00b0F above normal<\/strong> (roughly 0.3 to 1.1\u00b0C<\/strong>). But it\u2019s important to remember that today\u2019s \u201cnormal\u201d is already 2 to 3\u00b0F (1.1 to 1.6\u00b0C)<\/strong> warmer than what it was just a few decades ago.<\/p>\n Up until June 25<\/strong>, rainfall totals<\/strong> across most major stations\u2014Rochester<\/strong>, St. Cloud<\/strong>, Marshall<\/strong>, Duluth<\/strong>, and International Falls<\/strong>\u2014were actually below normal<\/strong>. The narrative changed rapidly with a major soaking storm mid-week<\/strong>, which shifted monthly totals dramatically<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The most dramatic changes happened in west-central Minnesota<\/strong>, particularly in Kandiyohi County<\/strong>, which finished the month nearly 8 inches (about 20 cm) above normal<\/strong>. Incredibly, several communities in the area reported over 12 inches (30.5 cm)<\/strong> of rainfall in June\u2014more than double the monthly average<\/strong>, which usually falls between 4 and 5 inches (10 to 13 cm)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n In the end, most of central and southern Minnesota<\/strong> saw 150% to over 200% of their usual June precipitation<\/strong>. That\u2019s a significant shift\u2014one that could skew our memories of what a \u201cwet\u201d or \u201cdry\u201d June looks like moving forward.<\/p>\n In contrast to the south, northern Minnesota<\/strong> experienced slightly cooler than normal temperatures<\/strong>. Still, even in those regions, the deviation was modest\u2014just enough to stand out in a warming climate, but not enough to anchor the month as truly \u201ccool.\u201d<\/p>\n Another standout this June: severe weather activity<\/strong> surged, making it the most active start to storm season since 2021<\/strong>. Over the final weekend of June<\/strong>, eight tornadoes<\/strong> were reported, bringing the monthly total to 39<\/strong>\u2014a sharp increase over the average of 22<\/strong> for the month.<\/p>\n That raises the year-to-date tornado count to 48<\/strong>, already above Minnesota\u2019s annual average of 43<\/strong>. The storm season is off to a robust start, though July and August<\/strong> are historically less active.<\/p>\n Looking ahead, July<\/strong> is expected to trend warmer than normal<\/strong>. Forecast models and the Climate Prediction Center<\/strong> show a strong consensus<\/strong> for above-average temperatures statewide.
