Strong storms return to Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey this afternoon<\/strong>, bringing another round of dangerous conditions<\/strong> after Monday\u2019s powerful weather system<\/strong>. The heat<\/strong>, humidity<\/strong> and an incoming cold front<\/strong> are fueling the potential for flash flooding<\/strong> and damaging winds<\/strong>, especially during the evening commute<\/strong>.<\/p>\n On Monday<\/strong>, much of southeastern Pennsylvania<\/strong>, Delaware<\/strong> and South Jersey<\/strong> faced intense thunderstorms<\/strong>, which struck during the late afternoon<\/strong> and evening hours<\/strong>. With the temperature reaching 94\u00b0F (34\u00b0C)<\/strong> and the heat index soaring to 105\u00b0F (40\u00b0C)<\/strong>, conditions were primed for explosive storm development<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Overnight, heavy rainfall<\/strong>, strong wind gusts<\/strong> and frequent lightning<\/strong> caused downed trees<\/strong>, power outages<\/strong>, and localized flooding<\/strong>, especially in low-lying urban neighborhoods<\/strong>. Many residents in Philadelphia<\/strong>, Wilmington<\/strong> and Cherry Hill<\/strong> woke up Tuesday to waterlogged streets<\/strong>, damaged vegetation<\/strong>, and limited access to some roads<\/strong>.<\/p>\n A First Alert<\/strong> has been issued for Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.<\/strong> as the next wave of severe weather<\/strong> sets up across the region.<\/p>\n The atmosphere is once again very humid and unstable<\/strong>, and a cold front pushing in from the west<\/strong> will trigger severe thunderstorms<\/strong>, especially between mid-afternoon<\/strong> and early evening<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Expect frequent lightning<\/strong>, torrential downpours<\/strong>, and gusty winds<\/strong>, especially along the I-95 corridor<\/strong> and surrounding suburbs.<\/p>\n The most immediate danger is flash flooding<\/strong>, with 1 to 3 inches<\/strong> of rain likely and localized totals<\/strong> of up to 4 inches<\/strong> possible. With the soil already saturated<\/strong> from Monday’s storms, streams<\/strong>, creeks<\/strong>, and poorly drained roadways<\/strong> across Montgomery County<\/strong>, New Castle County<\/strong> and parts of South Jersey<\/strong> could quickly overflow.<\/p>\n Conditions may deteriorate within minutes<\/strong>, especially in urban flood zones<\/strong>, turning residential streets<\/strong> into rushing waterways<\/strong>. Flash flood warnings<\/strong> are likely this afternoon, and road closures<\/strong> may be needed in the most affected areas.<\/p>\n Wind gusts over 60 mph<\/strong> are possible, especially in severe cells<\/strong> that develop near the coastal plain<\/strong> and into interior counties<\/strong>. This level of wind can topple trees<\/strong>, especially those already weakened by saturated ground<\/strong>, and lead to power outages<\/strong> or structural damage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Communities from Reading<\/strong> to Trenton<\/strong>, including Camden<\/strong>, should be alert for downed branches<\/strong>, blown debris<\/strong>, and interrupted utility service<\/strong> during peak storm hours.<\/p>\n Although showers<\/strong> may linger into Wednesday morning<\/strong>, skies are expected to partially clear<\/strong> by the afternoon<\/strong>, with lower humidity levels<\/strong> moving in behind the front.<\/p>\n The Fourth of July forecast<\/strong> looks much more favorable across the region, with sunshine<\/strong>, temperatures near 85\u00b0F (29\u00b0C)<\/strong>, and noticeably drier air<\/strong>\u2014ideal conditions for fireworks<\/strong>, parades<\/strong> and outdoor events<\/strong> throughout Pennsylvania<\/strong>, Delaware<\/strong> and New Jersey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Strong storms return to Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey this afternoon, bringing another round of dangerous conditions after Monday\u2019s powerful weather system.
