Strong winds<\/strong> and dust storms<\/strong> wreaked havoc across Las Vegas<\/strong> on Tuesday, July 1<\/strong>, as the monsoon season<\/strong> made its explosive entrance, toppling power poles<\/strong>, crippling infrastructure, and stranding drivers on major roads throughout the Las Vegas Valley<\/strong>.<\/p>\n By 7 p.m.<\/strong>, NV Energy<\/strong> reported a staggering 272 outages<\/strong> affecting over 20,000 customers<\/strong>. According to Meghin Delaney<\/strong>, spokeswoman for NV Energy<\/strong>, the main cause was “severe winds<\/strong>,” with gusts<\/strong> reaching up to 70 miles per hour<\/strong> (about 113 km\/h<\/strong>) \u2014 far stronger than previously forecasted.<\/p>\n Crews<\/strong> have been deployed and are working non-stop<\/strong> to restore power<\/strong>, although officials warned the damage is extensive<\/strong>. Nearly 50 utility poles<\/strong> have already been confirmed damaged or destroyed<\/strong>. Many will require complete replacement<\/strong>, a process that is expected to take days<\/strong>, not hours.<\/p>\n The brunt of the storm targeted eastern<\/strong> and central Las Vegas<\/strong>, where Tropicana Avenue<\/strong>, near Alta Drive<\/strong> and Decatur Boulevard<\/strong>, became a flashpoint of destruction. A section of Tropicana<\/strong> was shut down<\/strong> early in the evening after at least eight power poles snapped<\/strong>, leaving drivers trapped<\/strong> in their cars as live wires<\/strong> dangled dangerously close to traffic.<\/p>\n Kendra Day<\/strong>, a local commuter returning to Henderson<\/strong> from work on the Strip<\/strong>, found herself caught under fallen lines while driving her Jeep Cherokee<\/strong> along Tropicana Avenue<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u201cI knew the (wires) had fallen on me. I heard it hit my car and I thought I was going to die,\u201d Day said, speaking from just east of Pecos Road<\/strong>. First responders instructed her to stay inside her vehicle for nearly two hours<\/strong> until the area was deemed safe. Fortunately, she walked away uninjured<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Just feet away from Day\u2019s car, Claudia London<\/strong> of Las Vegas<\/strong> was also trapped inside her Toyota Prius<\/strong> as the violent winds<\/strong> and blinding dust<\/strong> engulfed the road.<\/p>\n \u201cThe wind coming from the south was so severe, it was zero visibility,\u201d London recalled. \u201cI heard a big boom… it turns out it was the wires that caved in my roof.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n London described the scene as chaotic<\/strong> and apocalyptic<\/strong>, with multiple poles downed<\/strong> across Tropicana Avenue<\/strong> and no way to see through the dust.<\/p>\n This storm marked the official beginning<\/strong> of the 2025 monsoon season<\/strong> in Southern Nevada<\/strong>, and its arrival was anything but subtle.
