However, a <strong>Kp index of 5<\/strong> \u2014 a key measure of aurora strength \u2014 suggests that <strong>auroras could extend into northern U.S. skies<\/strong> if solar winds align just right.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>solar eruption<\/strong> in question was launched from the Sun on <strong>June 28<\/strong>, but its arrival at <strong>Earth&#8217;s magnetic field<\/strong> has been delayed, now projected to <strong>peak on the evening of Wednesday, July 2<\/strong>, and possibly linger into <strong>early Thursday, July 3<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As NOAA stated earlier today on <strong>X (formerly Twitter)<\/strong>:<br \/>\n<strong>\u201cG1 (Minor) geomagnetic storming is likely 02\u201303 July due to the CME effects.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Where the Northern Lights may be seen tonight<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If skies remain clear and forecasts hold, <strong>aurora sightings<\/strong> could occur in parts of <strong>Washington<\/strong>, <strong>northern Idaho<\/strong>, <strong>Montana<\/strong>, <strong>Wyoming<\/strong>, <strong>North Dakota<\/strong>, <strong>South Dakota<\/strong>, <strong>Minnesota<\/strong>, <strong>Wisconsin<\/strong>, <strong>Michigan<\/strong>, <strong>Iowa<\/strong>, <strong>New York<\/strong>, <strong>Vermont<\/strong>, <strong>New Hampshire<\/strong> and <strong>Maine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Viewlines released by NOAA<\/strong> suggest the <strong>best chances<\/strong> lie near the <strong>U.S.\u2013Canada border<\/strong>, especially in <strong>rural or remote areas<\/strong> with <strong>minimal light pollution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>When and how to catch the aurora<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Aurora activity is highly unpredictable<\/strong>, and visibility can shift rapidly depending on <strong>solar wind conditions<\/strong>, which are measured in real-time by NASA&#8217;s <strong>DSCOVR<\/strong> and <strong>ACE satellites<\/strong>. These satellites, located about <strong>1 million miles from Earth<\/strong>, can offer a <strong>30-minute advance warning<\/strong> once the <strong>solar wind&#8217;s magnetic intensity and speed<\/strong> become favorable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Night sky watchers<\/strong> should remain flexible, as even with favorable forecasts, <strong>Northern Lights can be elusive<\/strong>. Sudden weather changes or increased <strong>moonlight<\/strong> from the <strong>first quarter Moon<\/strong> tonight may interfere with visibility, especially in more urbanized areas.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>The Milky Way adds to the night\u2019s magic<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This week offers <strong>ideal conditions to view the Milky Way<\/strong>, particularly its <strong>luminous galactic core<\/strong> that rises in the <strong>southern sky<\/strong> after sunset during the summer months. While it\u2019s visible throughout the year, its most <strong>dramatic appearance<\/strong> occurs between <strong>late May and September<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In tonight\u2019s skies, the <strong>Milky Way\u2019s core<\/strong> will stretch above the horizon, presenting a stunning <strong>ribbon of stars<\/strong>, nebulae and star clusters for those positioned far from artificial light. However, as the <strong>Moon grows brighter<\/strong>, some <strong>light pollution<\/strong> is inevitable.<\/p>\n<p>Stay alert for possible <strong>aurora flares<\/strong> later this evening across the <strong>northern U.S.<\/strong>, especially between <strong>10 PM and 2 AM local time<\/strong>.
