A spectacular cosmic show is heading for the skies over the northern United States.<\/strong> A delayed coronal mass ejection<\/strong> \u2014 a powerful burst of solar particles from the Sun<\/strong> \u2014 could spark a minor geomagnetic storm<\/strong> tonight, triggering displays of the Northern Lights<\/strong> just as the Milky Way<\/strong> makes its stunning entrance into the summer night sky<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

According to the Space Weather Prediction Center<\/strong> of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)<\/strong>, the geomagnetic activity<\/strong> may intensify as darkness sets in across the U.S. on Wednesday evening<\/strong>, potentially creating vivid aurora displays<\/strong> in at least 14 states<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

What is expected from this geomagnetic event<\/strong><\/h3>\n

NOAA\u2019s three-day space weather outlook<\/strong> includes a forecast for a G1 geomagnetic storm<\/strong>, the lowest level on the G1 to G5 scale<\/strong> used to measure solar storm intensity<\/strong>. However, a Kp index of 5<\/strong> \u2014 a key measure of aurora strength \u2014 suggests that auroras could extend into northern U.S. skies<\/strong> if solar winds align just right.<\/p>\n

The solar eruption<\/strong> in question was launched from the Sun on June 28<\/strong>, but its arrival at Earth’s magnetic field<\/strong> has been delayed, now projected to peak on the evening of Wednesday, July 2<\/strong>, and possibly linger into early Thursday, July 3<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As NOAA stated earlier today on X (formerly Twitter)<\/strong>:
\n\u201cG1 (Minor) geomagnetic storming is likely 02\u201303 July due to the CME effects.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

Where the Northern Lights may be seen tonight<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If skies remain clear and forecasts hold, aurora sightings<\/strong> could occur in parts of Washington<\/strong>, northern Idaho<\/strong>, Montana<\/strong>, Wyoming<\/strong>, North Dakota<\/strong>, South Dakota<\/strong>, Minnesota<\/strong>, Wisconsin<\/strong>, Michigan<\/strong>, Iowa<\/strong>, New York<\/strong>, Vermont<\/strong>, New Hampshire<\/strong> and Maine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Viewlines released by NOAA<\/strong> suggest the best chances<\/strong> lie near the U.S.\u2013Canada border<\/strong>, especially in rural or remote areas<\/strong> with minimal light pollution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

When and how to catch the aurora<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Aurora activity is highly unpredictable<\/strong>, and visibility can shift rapidly depending on solar wind conditions<\/strong>, which are measured in real-time by NASA’s DSCOVR<\/strong> and ACE satellites<\/strong>. These satellites, located about 1 million miles from Earth<\/strong>, can offer a 30-minute advance warning<\/strong> once the solar wind’s magnetic intensity and speed<\/strong> become favorable.<\/p>\n

Night sky watchers<\/strong> should remain flexible, as even with favorable forecasts, Northern Lights can be elusive<\/strong>. Sudden weather changes or increased moonlight<\/strong> from the first quarter Moon<\/strong> tonight may interfere with visibility, especially in more urbanized areas.<\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

The Milky Way adds to the night\u2019s magic<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This week offers ideal conditions to view the Milky Way<\/strong>, particularly its luminous galactic core<\/strong> that rises in the southern sky<\/strong> after sunset during the summer months. While it\u2019s visible throughout the year, its most dramatic appearance<\/strong> occurs between late May and September<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In tonight\u2019s skies, the Milky Way\u2019s core<\/strong> will stretch above the horizon, presenting a stunning ribbon of stars<\/strong>, nebulae and star clusters for those positioned far from artificial light. However, as the Moon grows brighter<\/strong>, some light pollution<\/strong> is inevitable.<\/p>\n

Stay alert for possible aurora flares<\/strong> later this evening across the northern U.S.<\/strong>, especially between 10 PM and 2 AM local time<\/strong>.
