Weather in June across Minnesota<\/strong> may have felt<\/em> cloudy<\/strong>, cool<\/strong>, and damp<\/strong>, but data tells a more complex story<\/strong>\u2014especially when you consider how our understanding of what\u2019s \u201cnormal\u201d is rapidly evolving.<\/p>\n While many in Minnesota<\/strong>, including myself, had the impression of a chilly and rainy month, that perception wasn\u2019t entirely accurate. Rainfall totals<\/strong> were below average<\/strong> through much of June<\/strong>, and it wasn\u2019t until the final week<\/strong> that precipitation numbers surged<\/strong>, particularly across central and southern Minnesota<\/strong>.<\/p>\n In fact, as of June 24<\/strong>, climate reporting stations like Rochester<\/strong>, Duluth<\/strong>, St. Cloud<\/strong>, and the Twin Cities<\/strong> were all tracking below-average rainfall<\/strong>. Then came a multi-day soaking<\/strong> that reversed the monthly trend. West-central Minnesota<\/strong>, especially Kandiyohi County<\/strong>, saw dramatic gains. In some areas, rainfall for the month topped 12 inches<\/strong>, nearly 8 inches above normal<\/strong>. Many locations finished the month with 150% to more than 200%<\/strong> of typical June rainfall<\/strong>, which usually averages around 4 to 5 inches<\/strong>.<\/p>\n When it comes to temperatures<\/strong>, June 2025<\/strong> delivered an interesting split. Northern Minnesota<\/strong> remained slightly cooler than normal<\/strong>, but much of central<\/strong> and southern Minnesota<\/strong> ended the month with above-average temps<\/strong>.<\/p>\n But here’s the key: the \u201cnormal\u201d<\/strong> baseline used by meteorologists is based on the 1991\u20132020 average<\/strong>, which is already 2 to 3 degrees Fahrenheit (1.1 to 1.7 \u00b0C)<\/strong> warmer than past decades. So even a 0.5 to 2 degree Fahrenheit (0.3 to 1.1 \u00b0C)<\/strong> anomaly compared to recent averages means we\u2019re looking at 2.5 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit (1.4 to 2.8 \u00b0C)<\/strong> warmer than the Junes of the 1980s and 1990s<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Interestingly, this June<\/strong> echoed what I remember from growing up in the ’80s and ’90s<\/strong>\u2014those early summer weeks<\/strong> after school let out rarely offered perfect swimming weather. Cloudy skies<\/strong>, cool mornings<\/strong>, and the occasional hot spike<\/strong> defined the month. This year was similar in feel<\/em>, but again\u2014still warmer<\/strong> than it used to be.<\/p>\n This June also brought the most active start to severe weather season<\/strong> that Minnesota<\/strong> has seen in the last three years<\/strong>. The final weekend of the month added eight more tornadoes<\/strong>, bringing June\u2019s total to 39<\/strong>\u2014well above the average of 22<\/strong>. Year-to-date, Minnesota<\/strong> has already reported 48 tornadoes<\/strong>, surpassing the annual norm of 43<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The model consensus<\/strong> heading into July<\/strong> points toward above-normal temperatures<\/strong> for most of Minnesota<\/strong>, with a drier trend<\/strong> especially likely in western parts of the state<\/strong>.
