Las Vegas<\/strong>, Nevada<\/strong> \u2014 A powerful windstorm<\/strong> swept through the Las Vegas Valley<\/strong> on Tuesday evening, July 1<\/strong>, unleashing gusts up to 70 mph<\/strong> that caused widespread damage<\/strong>, power outages<\/strong>, and moments of real fear<\/strong> for residents caught in its path, as monsoon season<\/strong> arrived in full force.<\/p>\n By 7:00 p.m. Tuesday<\/strong>, NV Energy<\/strong> reported 272 outages<\/strong> impacting over 20,000 customers<\/strong>. As of 9:30 a.m. Wednesday<\/strong>, 97 outages<\/strong> were still affecting 3,738 homes and businesses<\/strong> across the Las Vegas Valley<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The utility company confirmed that the damage was worse than forecasted<\/strong>, with wind gusts<\/strong> surpassing 70 miles per hour (113 km\/h)<\/strong> in multiple areas. Meghin Delaney<\/strong>, spokesperson for NV Energy<\/strong>, said that nearly 50 utility poles<\/strong> were either damaged<\/strong> or completely destroyed<\/strong>, requiring full replacement.<\/p>\n The stretch of East Tropicana Avenue<\/strong> between South Eastern Avenue<\/strong> and South Sandhill Road<\/strong> remains closed<\/strong> as crews work around the clock to restore electricity<\/strong> and repair the storm-battered infrastructure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The storm left many motorists stranded<\/strong> as power poles snapped<\/strong> and live wires fell<\/strong>. In a harrowing moment, Kendra Day<\/strong>, a 35-year-old Las Vegas resident<\/strong>, found herself trapped inside her Jeep Cherokee<\/strong> after live power lines<\/strong> collapsed onto her vehicle near Tropicana Avenue and Pecos Road<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u201cI was on my way to the freeway to go home to Henderson<\/strong>, but then the wind came and down went the poles,\u201d Day recalled. \u201cI knew the wires had fallen on me. I heard it hit my car and I thought I was going to die<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n Day remained inside her SUV for nearly two hours<\/strong>, following 911\u2019s advice not to exit in case the wires were still live<\/strong>. Emergency responders eventually cleared her, and though shaken, she escaped without serious injuries. \u201cGod was on my side today<\/strong>,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n The east and central valley<\/strong> suffered the brunt of the storm, with the area around Alta Drive<\/strong> and Decatur Boulevard<\/strong> particularly impacted. Along Tropicana Avenue<\/strong>, at least eight utility poles<\/strong> snapped in a single section, plunging the area into darkness and trapping vehicles.<\/p>\n Another driver, Claudia London<\/strong>, was behind the wheel of her Toyota Prius<\/strong> when power lines collapsed onto her roof. \u201cThe wind coming from the south was so severe, it was zero visibility<\/strong>,\u201d she said. \u201cAll of a sudden, I hear a big boom<\/strong>… turns out it was the wires that had caved in my roof<\/strong>. I\u2019ve never experienced anything like that in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n Utility crews<\/strong> are working day and night<\/strong> to restore services and replace damaged infrastructure. NV Energy stated, \u201cThe damage is significant<\/strong> and will take time to restore.
