A polar cold front<\/strong> is sweeping through a large portion of Argentina<\/strong>, and Buenos Aires City<\/strong> is now under a code orange alert<\/strong> due to persistently low temperatures<\/strong>. After initially entering through the southern regions<\/strong>, the icy air mass surged through Patagonia<\/strong>, and is now entrenched across the central provinces<\/strong>, moving slowly northward. Although the worst of the chill hit during the weekend<\/strong> and the early part of the week<\/strong>, the lingering cold remains a concern.<\/p>\n

According to the National Meteorological Service (SMN)<\/strong>, Buenos Aires City<\/strong> will remain under orange alert<\/strong> for the rest of the week<\/strong>. This level of warning implies a moderate to high health risk<\/strong>, particularly affecting vulnerable groups<\/strong> such as children, the elderly, and those without adequate shelter.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Cloudy skies over Buenos Aires, no rain expected<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Thursday<\/strong>, the day is expected to start with a frigid low near 37\u00b0F (3\u00b0C)<\/strong> in the early morning<\/strong>, before gradually warming up to a high of 54\u00b0F (12\u00b0C)<\/strong> by the afternoon<\/strong>, maintaining that temperature until the evening<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Morning skies will be mostly clear<\/strong>, but cloud cover<\/strong> will steadily increase. By the afternoon<\/strong>, conditions will become partly cloudy<\/strong>, and by nightfall<\/strong>, skies are forecast to be fully overcast<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Friday<\/strong> is expected to bring similar weather<\/strong>, closing out the week with a high of 54\u00b0F (12\u00b0C)<\/strong> and a morning low around 41\u00b0F (5\u00b0C)<\/strong>\u2014a slight increase from Thursday\u2019s minimum. Despite the absence of rain<\/strong>, skies will remain cloudy all day<\/strong>, with limited sunlight<\/strong> throughout.<\/p>\n

Greater Buenos Aires also under orange alert<\/strong><\/p>\n

The orange warning<\/strong> extends beyond the capital. In the southern part of Buenos Aires Province<\/strong>, places like La Plata<\/strong>, Chascom\u00fas<\/strong>, and Dolores<\/strong> are facing the same health advisory. In the northern areas<\/strong>, including San Isidro<\/strong>, Tigre<\/strong>, Escobar<\/strong>, and Pilar<\/strong>, the alert remains active.<\/p>\n

Moving west, La Matanza<\/strong>, Mor\u00f3n<\/strong>, Merlo<\/strong>, Moreno<\/strong>, and even Ca\u00f1uelas<\/strong> are also under orange alert<\/strong>. Further outside the metro region, towns like Las Flores<\/strong>, Azul<\/strong>, and Olavarr\u00eda<\/strong> are listed under a code yellow alert<\/strong>, indicating slightly less severe risk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Some districts, such as Chivilcoy<\/strong>, 25 de Mayo<\/strong>, and 9 de Julio<\/strong>, are now under red alert<\/strong>\u2014the highest level\u2014for extreme cold<\/strong>, as is Tandil<\/strong>, the only area in the province under such an intense advisory.<\/p>\n

Wider national impact: cold reaches Mendoza, San Juan, and the northeast<\/strong><\/p>\n

Beyond Buenos Aires<\/strong>, the orange alert<\/strong> is in effect across a wide swath of the country, including Mendoza<\/strong>, San Juan<\/strong>, La Rioja<\/strong>, Corrientes<\/strong>, Entre R\u00edos<\/strong>, Misiones<\/strong>, Santa Fe<\/strong>, and Formosa<\/strong>. A yellow alert<\/strong> has been issued for Salta<\/strong>, Chaco<\/strong>, Santiago del Estero<\/strong>, and parts of Formosa<\/strong>, where the cold is less severe but still notable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Frozen shorelines in Quilmes: rare sight on the R\u00edo de la Plata<\/strong><\/p>\n

The deep freeze has also impacted Quilmes<\/strong>, on the southern outskirts of Buenos Aires<\/strong>, where a thin layer of ice<\/strong> was spotted forming along the banks of the R\u00edo de la Plata<\/strong>. The frozen shoreline, filmed and shared by Instagram user @decastrokevin<\/strong>, shows ice collecting in a low-lying, stagnant area<\/strong> near La Ribera<\/strong>. The runner commented, \u201cI had to touch it to believe it<\/strong>,\u201d after observing the frozen surface.<\/p>\n

Although the entire river<\/strong> hasn\u2019t frozen due to its salinity and water flow<\/strong>, the intense cold<\/strong> combined with stagnant coastal water<\/strong> created ideal conditions for ice formation<\/strong>\u2014a rare event in this region.<\/p>\n

The video quickly made the rounds on social media<\/strong>, sparking a mix of awe and concern<\/strong>.
