These fast-moving systems are capable of producing wind gusts up to 55 mph<\/strong>, nickel-sized hail<\/strong>, and torrential downpours<\/strong>. The storms may intensify quickly<\/strong>, and residents are strongly urged to stay tuned to local weather updates<\/strong> throughout the afternoon.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Lightning safety remains critical as storms approach<\/strong><\/p>\n Every year, lightning strikes the United States approximately 25 million times<\/strong>, with the vast majority of these discharges occurring in summer<\/strong>. Tragically, an average of 20 fatalities<\/strong> are recorded annually due to lightning-related incidents. The risk increases dramatically<\/strong> as a thunderstorm nears and is highest when the system is directly overhead<\/strong>. Even once the rain stops, wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunderclap<\/strong> before resuming outdoor activities, as lightning can strike even in a clearing sky<\/strong>.<\/p>\n When indoor shelter is not available<\/strong>, steer clear of elevated ground<\/strong>, isolated trees<\/strong>, open fields<\/strong>, or bodies of water<\/strong>. Always avoid metal objects<\/strong>, as they are excellent conductors<\/strong> of electrical energy, though they do not attract lightning on their own.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Driving through heavy rain: dangerous road conditions in wet weather<\/strong><\/p>\n Rain not only obscures visibility but also transforms roads into slick, hazardous surfaces<\/strong>. As storms sweep across Central Pennsylvania<\/strong>, motorists are urged to take the following precautions:<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Flooded ditches and culverts<\/strong> can be deceptively powerful\u2014never walk or park near fast-moving water<\/strong>. While driving, increase following distances<\/strong>, especially behind large trucks and buses<\/strong>, whose tire spray can severely reduce visibility<\/strong>. Use headlights<\/strong> even during daylight hours to improve visibility, and be cautious of blind spots<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The first 30 minutes of rainfall<\/strong> are particularly risky, as oil and grime on the road surface<\/strong> mix with water, creating an extremely slippery layer<\/strong>.
