These tools have long been instrumental for <strong>monitoring global atmospheric conditions<\/strong>, especially over <strong>remote or inaccessible regions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>DMSP satellites<\/strong>, which have been <strong>in service for decades<\/strong>, typically capture <strong>twice-daily global imagery<\/strong>. They monitor <strong>cloud patterns<\/strong>, <strong>wind velocities<\/strong>, and <strong>storm drifts<\/strong>, contributing critical information for detecting <strong>fog<\/strong>, <strong>severe thunderstorms<\/strong>, <strong>dust storms<\/strong>, and even <strong>tropical cyclones<\/strong>, according to the <strong>U.S. Space Force<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, with the recent deployment of the <strong>Weather System Follow-on Microwave (WSF-M)<\/strong>, the <strong>Department of Defense<\/strong> is transitioning toward a <strong>new era of meteorological observation<\/strong>. First launched in <strong>2024<\/strong>, the <strong>WSF-M<\/strong> system was declared to have reached <strong>Initial Operational Capacity<\/strong> in <strong>April 2025<\/strong>. It brings <strong>enhanced precision<\/strong>, allowing analysts to track <strong>sea ice<\/strong>, <strong>snow depth<\/strong>, <strong>soil moisture<\/strong>, and <strong>cyclonic activity<\/strong>, while also delivering more <strong>accurate wind measurements<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to NOAA, it will now depend on <strong>WSF-M<\/strong> along with the <strong>Electro-Optical Weather System (EWS)<\/strong> to fill the gap left by the <strong>DMSP phase-out<\/strong>. Despite the fact that the DMSP satellites are still technically functional, they are <strong>more than ten years beyond their expected service life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes amid <strong>increased political scrutiny<\/strong>. Earlier this year, the <strong>U.S. Coast Guard Academy<\/strong> reportedly removed references to <strong>climate change<\/strong> in order to align with <strong>President Donald Trump\u2019s administration<\/strong>, which has shown strong resistance to climate-related policy initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Despite losing <strong>military-sourced DMSP data<\/strong>, <strong>NOAA<\/strong> maintains access to vital global weather information through its <strong>Joint Polar Satellite System<\/strong>, as well as through <strong>ground-based radar<\/strong>, <strong>weather buoys<\/strong>, and other <strong>international satellite systems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>NOAA clarified in its <strong>July release<\/strong> that the shift away from DMSP is not a loss, but a <strong>modernization strategy<\/strong>: &#8220;<strong>The transition to WSF-M and EWS represents a modernization effort aimed at providing more resilient and enhanced environmental monitoring capabilities<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This technological evolution coincides with broader modernization efforts within the <strong>U.S. military space infrastructure<\/strong>. The <strong>Space Force<\/strong>, for example, continues to struggle with <strong>GPS modernization<\/strong>, according to a recent <strong>Government Accountability Office<\/strong> report. Meanwhile, the <strong>Army<\/strong> is actively overhauling satellite infrastructure, installing new <strong>teleport communication systems<\/strong> in <strong>Okinawa<\/strong> this past <strong>March<\/strong>, which are expected to be <strong>fully operational by November<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Further investments are also being made.
