KERRVILLE, Texas<\/strong> \u2013 Catastrophic flash floods<\/strong> swept through Central Texas<\/strong> early Friday morning<\/strong>, claiming the lives of at least 24 people<\/strong> and leaving dozens more unaccounted for<\/strong>, according to Kerr County officials<\/strong>. The situation remains critical, as emergency crews<\/strong> continue search and rescue operations along the Guadalupe River<\/strong>, which surged to nearly 30 feet<\/strong> (9.1 meters) in Kerrville<\/strong>, well above major flood stage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Historic rainfall<\/strong>\u2014measured between 12 and 15 inches<\/strong> (305 to 381 mm) in some areas\u2014prompted the National Weather Service (NWS)<\/strong> to issue multiple Flash Flood Emergencies<\/strong>, beginning near San Angelo<\/strong> and later near Kerrville<\/strong>, where water levels rose rapidly, catching entire communities off guard.<\/p>\n

“We didn’t know this flood was coming,”<\/strong> said Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly<\/strong> during a Friday press conference. “Rest assured, no one knew this kind of flood was coming.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2018Deadly flood wave\u2019 devastates Texas Hill Country<\/strong><\/p>\n

The FOX Forecast Center<\/strong> described the flooding as a “deadly flood wave<\/strong>,” with automated gauges showing rapid rises<\/strong> along the Guadalupe River<\/strong> from Center Point<\/strong> to Sisterdale<\/strong>. In Comfort, Texas<\/strong>, the river rose over 26 feet<\/strong> (7.9 meters) in just 45 minutes<\/strong>. In Kerrville<\/strong>, it climbed more than 20 feet<\/strong> (6 meters) within one hour.<\/p>\n

The Guadalupe River<\/strong>, swollen beyond its banks, flooded homes<\/strong>, washed away roads<\/strong>, and isolated entire communities<\/strong>. Footage from a bridge in Kerrville<\/strong> shows the river roaring beneath<\/strong>, carrying large debris. NOAA river gauges<\/strong> confirm the river reached one of its highest levels ever recorded<\/strong>, eclipsing even the deadly July 1987 floods<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Hundreds rescued, dozens missing<\/strong><\/p>\n

Officials confirmed that around 300 people<\/strong> have been rescued<\/strong> so far, but warn that many more remain unaccounted for<\/strong> due to the widespread nature of the flooding and the number of recreational areas<\/strong> along the river. Among the missing are children attending a summer camp<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A message to parents from Camp Mystic<\/strong>, a private Christian camp for girls<\/strong> located near Hunt<\/strong>, 18 miles west of Kerrville, confirmed they had suffered “catastrophic level<\/strong>” flooding. The letter stated, “If your daughter is not accounted for, you have been notified.”<\/strong> The camp reported the loss of power, water, and Wifi<\/strong>, and said the highway into the camp had been washed away<\/strong>, severely limiting access to assistance.<\/p>\n

“Please continue to pray and send any help if you have contacts to do so,”<\/strong> the letter concluded.<\/p>\n

Evacuations ordered, shelter set up at Walmart<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Kerrville Police Department<\/strong> issued an urgent evacuation order<\/strong> for all residents living near the Guadalupe River<\/strong>, calling this a “life-threatening event.”<\/strong> A nearby Walmart<\/strong> has been converted into a shelter<\/strong> for displaced residents.<\/p>\n

The Kerr County Sheriff’s Office<\/strong> said multiple bodies<\/strong> have already been recovered and confirmed the death toll has risen to 24<\/strong>, with more expected. Victims include both adults and children<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe entire county is an extremely active scene,\u201d<\/strong> deputies said. Residents are urged to shelter in place<\/strong> and avoid all non-essential travel. Anyone living near streams<\/strong>, creeks<\/strong>, or the river<\/strong> should move to higher ground immediately.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In San Angelo<\/strong>, authorities report a 2-mile-wide area<\/strong> severely affected by flooding. The city\u2019s emergency dispatch center<\/strong> received over 100 calls<\/strong> for rescue and assistance<\/strong> between 5 and 6 a.m.<\/strong> Friday.<\/p>\n

Widespread rainfall continues across West Texas and New Mexico<\/strong><\/p>\n

Flood Watches<\/strong> remain in effect across West Texas<\/strong> and parts of New Mexico<\/strong> through Friday evening<\/strong>, with forecasts predicting 3 to 5 more inches<\/strong> (76 to 127 mm) of rain in some spots.<\/p>\n

Meteorologists blame a stationary front<\/strong> draped across the region, combined with an upper-level disturbance<\/strong> moving through the Four Corners<\/strong>, for the persistent thunderstorms<\/strong> that have triggered this devastating flooding.<\/p>\n
