Here’s what to expect across Minnesota this Independence Day weekend.<\/strong><\/p>\n Friday, July 4<\/strong>, is shaping up to be the hottest Fourth of July in four years<\/strong> across Minnesota<\/strong>, with temperatures soaring into the low and mid-90s\u00b0F<\/strong> (around 33\u201335\u00b0C<\/strong>). It\u2019s on track to become the second-hottest Fourth since 2000<\/strong> \u2014 only 2012<\/strong> was hotter, when temperatures spiked to 101\u00b0F<\/strong> (38\u00b0C).<\/p>\n <\/p>\n But the heat alone isn\u2019t the only concern<\/strong>. Tropical humidity<\/strong>, with dew points climbing into the low to mid-70s\u00b0F<\/strong> (around 22\u201324\u00b0C<\/strong>), will make the air feel incredibly muggy and oppressive<\/strong>. This combination of extreme heat and humidity<\/strong> will push heat index values near 100\u00b0F<\/strong> (38\u00b0C), especially across western and central Minnesota<\/strong> by late Friday afternoon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Because of this, the National Weather Service<\/strong> has issued both heat advisories and excessive heat warnings<\/strong> for a wide swath of central and northern Minnesota<\/strong>, effective from midday Friday through 8 p.m.<\/strong> Local officials are urging caution with any outdoor plans during the hottest parts of the day.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n But the biggest wildcard<\/strong> for holiday celebrations, particularly fireworks Friday night<\/strong>, is the threat of storms<\/strong>. A developing low-pressure system<\/strong> and approaching cold front<\/strong> are set to trigger showers and thunderstorms<\/strong> across much of Minnesota<\/strong> from late Friday into Saturday<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Storms are expected to initiate in northwest Minnesota<\/strong> late Friday afternoon<\/strong> and gradually expand southeast<\/strong> through the evening. Several weather models show different timings, but the European model<\/strong> continues to suggest that storms could reach the Twin Cities metro right around fireworks time<\/strong>. However, many forecasters believe this model may be too fast<\/strong>, meaning fireworks could still go off before storms arrive<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n There is a SLIGHT risk (level 2 of 5)<\/strong> for severe weather<\/strong> in northwest and northern Minnesota<\/strong>, where initial storm cells could become strong to severe<\/strong>, producing damaging wind gusts over 60 mph<\/strong>, with a low but not zero chance of tornadoes or large hail<\/strong>. As these storms track southeast through the night, they\u2019re expected to gradually weaken<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Twin Cities area<\/strong>, including Minneapolis and St. Paul<\/strong>, sits in the Marginal Risk zone (level 1 of 5)<\/strong>, meaning isolated severe storms are possible<\/strong>, but not likely widespread. The primary concern will be downburst wind gusts<\/strong>, which could accompany some of the more organized cells.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n That said, atmospheric shear<\/strong>, which helps support longer-lived severe storms, is relatively weak<\/strong> in this setup. However, downdraft C.A.P.E.<\/strong>, which measures how fast air can descend within a storm, is notably high<\/strong> across eastern North Dakota<\/strong>, and western and northern Minnesota<\/strong> \u2014 supporting the potential for strong outflow winds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The HRRR model<\/strong> suggests areas across northern and western Minnesota<\/strong> could experience isolated wind gusts topping 60 mph<\/strong> between Friday evening and early overnight<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Heading into Saturday<\/strong>, expect lingering scattered thunderstorms<\/strong>, along with continued warmth and humidity<\/strong>. While the overall severe threat is lower<\/strong>, lightning remains a risk<\/strong>, especially if you’re planning time on lakes<\/strong> or outdoors.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n By Sunday and Monday<\/strong>, a shift in air mass behind the front will bring welcome relief<\/strong>.
