According to the mayor, the <strong>electrical surge<\/strong> traveled through the <strong>fireworks\u2019 control board<\/strong>, sparking an <strong>unexpected detonation<\/strong>. Several of the fireworks already in position <strong>went off before the scheduled time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Sanford Police Department<\/strong> and <strong>Mayor Woodruff<\/strong> confirmed that <strong>no one was injured or killed<\/strong> in the explosion. However, due to the damage caused by the surge and subsequent blast, the city had to <strong>cancel the evening&#8217;s fireworks display<\/strong>, originally set to begin at <strong>9:15 p.m.<\/strong>, as part of the &#8220;<strong>Star Spangled Sanford July 4th on The Riverwalk<\/strong>&#8221; event.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>What officials said<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In a <strong>short video statement posted to Facebook<\/strong>, a spokesperson for the <strong>Sanford Police Department<\/strong> said the celebration would <strong>still go on<\/strong> with <strong>live music<\/strong>, <strong>food vendors<\/strong>, and <strong>family activities<\/strong>, but without the fireworks. The spokesperson also noted that <strong>much of the launching equipment was damaged<\/strong> in the explosion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bianca Gillett<\/strong>, speaking on behalf of the police, added: <em>&#8220;We still want everyone to come out and celebrate safely. Enjoy the great food, the entertainment \u2014 but please <strong>do not bring your own fireworks<\/strong>. They are not allowed at the event.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>What remains unclear<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s still unknown <strong>how many fireworks were set off<\/strong> or the <strong>full extent of the damage<\/strong> to the pyrotechnic systems. City officials have not yet confirmed whether an <strong>investigation<\/strong> will be launched, or whether the <strong>vendor or the city<\/strong> will evaluate the failure and consider system changes for future events.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>The setting of the event<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The &#8220;<strong>Star Spangled Sanford July 4th on The Riverwalk<\/strong>&#8221; is one of the most anticipated annual events in <strong>Central Florida<\/strong>, taking place along <strong>Sanford\u2019s scenic Riverwalk<\/strong> in the city\u2019s <strong>historic downtown<\/strong>. It typically draws <strong>large family crowds<\/strong> with <strong>live music<\/strong>, <strong>food trucks<\/strong>, <strong>kids\u2019 zones<\/strong>, and a <strong>fireworks finale<\/strong>, which this year was unexpectedly canceled.
