Deadly flooding alarms the Texas Hill Country on July 4<\/strong><\/p>\n CANYON LAKE, Texas \u2014<\/strong> Relentless rainfall<\/strong> and life-threatening flooding<\/strong> continue to strike the Texas Hill Country<\/strong>, with Canyon Lake<\/strong> and nearby communities entering a period of elevated alert<\/strong> following severe Independence Day storms<\/strong>. Major flooding<\/strong> is already being reported in Kerr County<\/strong> and Kendall County<\/strong>, as the Guadalupe River<\/strong> swells well beyond its historical banks.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Over the past several days, a powerful system has soaked the region<\/strong>, driving river levels dramatically higher<\/strong> and setting the stage for prolonged flood risk<\/strong>. The Guadalupe River<\/strong>, which flows directly into Canyon Lake<\/strong>, has reached dangerous flood stage<\/strong>, particularly near Kerrville<\/strong> and Comfort<\/strong>, and is now pushing those floodwaters toward the reservoir<\/strong> northwest of New Braunfels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Canyon Lake<\/strong>, created with the construction of Canyon Dam<\/strong> in 1958 and fully impounded by 1968, is not only a key flood control reservoir<\/strong> but also a vital recreational and water conservation resource<\/strong>. With more than 8,200 acres of surface area<\/strong> and over 60 miles of shoreline<\/strong>, it anchors life in Comal County<\/strong>. This year, the lake has remained above 877 feet<\/strong> (267.3 meters) for the past month \u2014 a relatively stable zone<\/strong>, though notably lower<\/strong> than seasonal norms.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Today<\/strong>, the upper Guadalupe River<\/strong> is experiencing active flooding<\/strong>, with water levels continuing to rise. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers<\/strong>, which manages Canyon Lake operations<\/strong>, has confirmed that the reservoir currently retains enough capacity<\/strong> to absorb additional flows. Controlled releases<\/strong> of water from the lake would only occur if the elevation exceeds 909 feet<\/strong> (277.1 meters), a threshold that has not yet been met as of this morning, Friday, July 4, 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Nonetheless, the situation remains volatile<\/strong>. Evacuations were ordered<\/strong> early Friday in Kerr County<\/strong>, as the Guadalupe River surged past historic flood levels<\/strong>, inundating residential neighborhoods and low-lying areas. The City of Kerrville<\/strong> issued alerts urging residents to seek higher ground, reinforcing the severity of the July Fourth flooding event<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Over the decades, the development of Canyon Lake<\/strong> has transformed Comal County<\/strong>, giving rise to residential communities<\/strong>, tourism-driven marinas<\/strong>, and public parks<\/strong>.
