MARLBORO, Massachusetts \u2013 On Tuesday, July 1<\/strong>, just after sunset, a rare and stunning weather phenomenon<\/strong> captured the attention of residents across Central Massachusetts<\/strong>: a completely red rainbow<\/strong>, caught on camera by Carter Roy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cI was just heading to my basketball league that I play in on Tuesdays and Thursdays down in Marlboro<\/strong>,\u201d Roy said. \u201cThe storms had just passed us, and the sky was pretty wild. Then I noticed a rainbow starting to form.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Within minutes, the arc stretched fully across the sky, but something even more unusual happened \u2014 the rainbow turned bright red<\/strong>, visible only for a brief moment before fading.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cAll of a sudden, it went from day to night,\u201d<\/strong> Roy said. \u201cIt was right around dusk, and the sunset was behind me<\/strong>, which I think made the lighting feel so surreal.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Roy happened to be in the exact right place at the right time to witness a relatively rare meteorological event<\/strong> known as a red rainbow<\/strong> or monochrome rainbow<\/strong>. Unlike typical rainbows that display a full spectrum of colors, this type only shows shades of red, orange, and pink<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Michael Person<\/strong>, director of the MIT Wallace Astrophysical Observatory<\/strong> and senior lecturer in Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences<\/strong>, explained, \u201cA rainbow forms when sunlight is refracted through small water droplets<\/strong> in the atmosphere. As the light passes through, it spreads out into its component colors.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The light bends at a specific angle<\/strong>, creating the arc we see, with colors typically ranging from red to violet. Rainbows appear on the opposite side of the sky from the sun, at what’s called the “anti-solar point<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n <\/p>\n For a rainbow to appear in red hues only<\/strong>, several conditions must come together.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cIt happens at very low altitude<\/strong>, right above the horizon, when the sun is just rising or setting<\/strong>,\u201d Person said. \u201cAs the sun gets lower, the sky turns red \u2014 that familiar sunset glow. The same thing happens to the rainbow.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n At that angle, the thick atmosphere filters out all colors except red<\/strong>. The result is a low-lying red arc<\/strong> that forms opposite the setting sun.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Rainbows don\u2019t appear in other monochrome colors<\/strong>, Person added, noting that for a green rainbow to exist, the atmosphere would need to scatter everything except green \u2014 \u201cand we simply don\u2019t have that in our atmosphere.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Red rainbows are most commonly seen<\/strong> during this time of year, from late spring through early summer<\/strong>, when storms pass quickly, leaving behind enough lingering moisture<\/strong> and clear skies<\/strong> to let sunlight shine through, Person said.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cI wouldn\u2019t call the red rainbow rare,\u201d Person noted, \u201cbut you do have to get lucky.
