According to NOAA, this decision comes from the <strong>Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center<\/strong>, marking the <strong>end of an operational partnership<\/strong> that has lasted for decades.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>termination<\/strong> affects all data collected from the <strong>Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP)<\/strong>, <strong>Near-Earth Space Weather instruments<\/strong>, and other <strong>Department of Defense<\/strong> space assets. These <strong>satellites<\/strong>, originally designed to provide <strong>twice-daily global weather imagery<\/strong>, have played a vital role in <strong>monitoring cloud patterns, storm systems, fog, sandstorms<\/strong>, and <strong>tropical cyclones<\/strong>, especially in <strong>remote or hard-to-reach regions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Transition to modern satellite weather systems<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The decision reflects a broader shift by the <strong>Department of Defense<\/strong> toward the <strong>Weather System Follow-on Microwave (WSF-M)<\/strong>, a <strong>next-generation satellite platform<\/strong> that achieved <strong>Initial Operational Capacity<\/strong> in <strong>April 2025<\/strong>. Launched in <strong>2024<\/strong>, <strong>WSF-M<\/strong> offers <strong>more precise tracking<\/strong> of environmental variables such as <strong>sea ice<\/strong>, <strong>soil moisture<\/strong>, <strong>snow depth<\/strong>, and <strong>cyclonic wind patterns<\/strong>. It is expected to <strong>completely replace the DMSP<\/strong>, which NOAA described as being <strong>more than a decade past its intended operational lifespan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to WSF-M, NOAA will also rely on the <strong>Electro-Optical Weather System (EWS)<\/strong> for ongoing meteorological needs. NOAA stressed that this change is not a loss, but a <strong>strategic transition toward greater resiliency and capability<\/strong> in the face of increasingly complex <strong>weather forecasting requirements<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Military modernization efforts under scrutiny<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This shift occurs amid broader modernization challenges across the <strong>U.S. military&#8217;s space infrastructure<\/strong>.
