As of this <strong>Saturday morning<\/strong>, the <strong>National Hurricane Center (NHC)<\/strong> has confirmed that the system\u2014originally <strong>Invest 92L<\/strong>\u2014has strengthened into <strong>Tropical Storm Chantal<\/strong>, now swirling over the <strong>warm waters<\/strong> of the <strong>Gulf Stream<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Chantal to bring rough seas, rain and lightning storms to Florida<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>While <strong>Florida<\/strong> won\u2019t face a <strong>direct landfall<\/strong>, <strong>residents along the east coast<\/strong>, especially from <strong>Daytona Beach<\/strong> to <strong>West Palm Beach<\/strong>, can expect <strong>heavy downpours<\/strong>, <strong>frequent lightning<\/strong>, and <strong>dangerous rip currents<\/strong> through <strong>Saturday evening<\/strong>. The most <strong>intense rainfall<\/strong> is forecast to hit <strong>after 3 p.m.<\/strong>, with skies remaining <strong>cloudy and unstable<\/strong> through the <strong>weekend<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strong winds<\/strong> are not out of the question either, especially in <strong>coastal communities<\/strong>, where <strong>gusts<\/strong> may reach <strong>40 to 50 mph (64\u201380 km\/h)<\/strong>. <strong>Boaters<\/strong> and <strong>beachgoers<\/strong> are being warned of <strong>rough surf conditions<\/strong>, particularly as <strong>Chantal<\/strong> churns near the <strong>Florida-Georgia line<\/strong>, generating <strong>unstable swells<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Chantal to make landfall in South Carolina early Sunday<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Forecast models now indicate that <strong>Chantal<\/strong> is on a path to <strong>make landfall in South Carolina<\/strong> by <strong>Sunday morning<\/strong>, with <strong>tropical storm warnings<\/strong> already in effect for parts of the <strong>Palmetto State&#8217;s coastline<\/strong>. There\u2019s potential for <strong>wind gusts near hurricane strength<\/strong>, and up to <strong>8 inches (203 mm)<\/strong> of rain are possible in portions of <strong>central North Carolina<\/strong>, especially along the <strong>I-95 corridor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As it tracks <strong>inland<\/strong>, the storm is expected to <strong>weaken<\/strong>, but <strong>remnants<\/strong> could still bring <strong>gusty winds<\/strong>, <strong>heavy rainfall<\/strong>, and <strong>coastal flooding<\/strong> to areas from <strong>Virginia<\/strong> up toward the <strong>Mid-Atlantic<\/strong> early next week.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Could Chantal reemerge over the Atlantic next week?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There remains a <strong>possibility<\/strong> that <strong>Chantal<\/strong> could <strong>exit the East Coast<\/strong> and <strong>reorganize<\/strong> in the <strong>open Atlantic<\/strong> next week.
