Monday, July 7, 2025<\/strong> \u2014 Tropical Depression Chantal<\/strong>, downgraded after making landfall at Litchfield Beach, South Carolina<\/strong>, continues to pose a significant threat to North Carolina<\/strong> and southern Virginia<\/strong>, despite weakening<\/strong> from its earlier tropical storm status.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami<\/strong>, Chantal<\/strong> is moving north-northeast at around 10 mph<\/strong>, but heavy rainfall remains a major concern<\/strong>, with storm totals potentially reaching up to 6 inches (152 mm)<\/strong> in some areas. Flood watches<\/strong> are currently in effect across central North Carolina<\/strong> and south-central Virginia<\/strong>, where the risk of flash flooding<\/strong> is considered elevated<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Verified cellphone videos<\/strong> captured flooded roads in Moore County, North Carolina<\/strong>, on Sunday<\/strong>, with sudden flash flooding<\/strong> reported in the towns of Southern Pines<\/strong> and Pinehurst<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Marine conditions<\/strong> along the Atlantic coast have also been hazardous. Buoys off the North Carolina coast<\/strong>, including one at Wilmington Harbor<\/strong>, recorded waves up to 10 feet (3 meters)<\/strong> before daybreak. According to federal forecasters, dangerous surf and rip currents<\/strong> will continue to affect the coastline from eastern Florida<\/strong> to the Mid-Atlantic states<\/strong> through at least the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Footage from North Myrtle Beach<\/strong> showed strong winds and turbulent surf<\/strong>, with gusts of 25\u201330 mph (40\u201348 km\/h)<\/strong> bending palm trees<\/strong> as lightning flashed<\/strong> across the sky.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n At landfall, Chantal’s maximum sustained winds<\/strong> were near 50 mph (80 km\/h)<\/strong>, weakening to around 30 mph (48 km\/h)<\/strong> as the system moved inland. However, federal meteorologists said Chantal could temporarily regain some strength<\/strong> as it tracks into Virginia overnight<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n A system is classified as a tropical storm<\/strong> when it sustains surface winds between 39 and 73 mph (63\u2013117 km\/h)<\/strong>.
