Stormier conditions<\/strong> are making their way back into New Mexico<\/strong> this Sunday<\/strong>, following a dry and hot Fourth of July<\/strong>. A gradual rise in temperatures<\/strong> will continue throughout the upcoming week, pushing much of the state into even hotter conditions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Saturday afternoon<\/strong>, strong to severe storms<\/strong> developed over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains<\/strong>, drifting east and southeast<\/strong> into the evening hours. While scattered showers<\/strong> also formed in Catron County<\/strong>, much of the precipitation<\/strong> evaporated before reaching the ground. Temperatures soared<\/strong> across New Mexico<\/strong>, surpassing those seen on Independence Day<\/strong>. Some isolated storms<\/strong> are still lingering in eastern New Mexico<\/strong> tonight, but they are expected to fade within a few hours<\/strong>. These systems are helping to increase moisture<\/strong> levels all the way into western parts<\/strong> of the state by Sunday morning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n By Sunday afternoon<\/strong>, expect showers and thunderstorms<\/strong> to intensify again<\/strong>, especially over the mountain ranges<\/strong>. Storms will initiate over the higher elevations<\/strong> early in the afternoon and then gradually drift east and southeast<\/strong>. Heavy downpours<\/strong> are forecast around the Ruidoso burn scar areas<\/strong>, particularly by 12 PM<\/strong>, where the risk of flash flooding<\/strong> will be a significant concern. Additional storm activity<\/strong> is also forecast for the Gila region<\/strong> and other parts of western New Mexico<\/strong>. These storms are likely to dissipate by late Sunday night<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Despite the rain potential, temperatures will remain extremely high<\/strong>. However, locations directly affected by rain and thunderstorms<\/strong> may experience a brief but noticeable cool down<\/strong> during the afternoon hours.<\/p>\n Looking ahead to Monday<\/strong>, the weather will mirror Sunday\u2019s pattern<\/strong>, though drier air<\/strong> will begin to filter into central and western New Mexico<\/strong>. A developing high-pressure system<\/strong> will start to take hold across the region after Monday<\/strong>, gradually ushering in more stable and drier conditions<\/strong>.
