Flood watches<\/strong> remain in effect<\/strong> this Monday, July 7, 2025<\/strong>, across much of Central Texas<\/strong>, following deadly storms<\/strong> that devastated parts of the region over the holiday weekend<\/strong>. Warnings extend through 7 p.m. CT<\/strong>, covering a wide swath including Austin<\/strong>, San Antonio<\/strong>, Kerrville<\/strong>, Killeen<\/strong>, Brady<\/strong>, Fredericksburg<\/strong> and Uvalde<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Early on Monday morning<\/strong>, slow-moving thunderstorms<\/strong> had already begun sweeping through parts of these communities. But forecasters warned the worst may not yet be over. Through the rest of the day, an additional 2 to 4 inches of rain<\/strong> (about 5 to 10 cm<\/strong>) is expected to fall across already saturated ground<\/strong>, with some localized totals exceeding 6 inches<\/strong> (more than 15 cm<\/strong>).<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Conditions may begin to improve by Tuesday<\/strong>, as the moisture-laden weather system<\/strong> slowly starts shifting eastward.<\/p>\n In Hunt<\/strong>, along the banks of the Guadalupe River<\/strong>, recovery efforts are underway after a flash flood<\/strong> tore through Camp Mystic<\/strong> on Sunday<\/strong>, forcing campers to evacuate swiftly. Images captured<\/strong> residents removing soaked bedding<\/strong> and belongings amid muddy waters and debris.<\/p>\n While Texas<\/strong> battles rising waters, other parts of the U.S.<\/strong> are also under threat. Tropical Storm Chantal<\/strong> brought torrential rain to North Carolina<\/strong> on Sunday<\/strong>, with some areas near Chapel Hill<\/strong> receiving more than 10 inches<\/strong> (over 25 cm<\/strong>) of rain. The Haw River<\/strong> at Bynum<\/strong> surged to nearly 22 feet<\/strong>, setting a record crest<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Chantal<\/strong> has now weakened into a post-tropical cyclone<\/strong>, but it continues to move northward<\/strong>, bringing the threat of flash flooding<\/strong> to eastern Virginia<\/strong>, Maryland<\/strong>, Delaware<\/strong>, and northern New Jersey<\/strong>. Urban areas along the I-95 corridor<\/strong> are especially vulnerable to sudden, tropical downpours<\/strong>. In addition to rain, coastal communities<\/strong> from the Carolinas<\/strong> to the Delmarva Peninsula<\/strong> face strong surf<\/strong> and dangerous rip currents<\/strong>.<\/p>\n As rains soak the South<\/strong> and Mid-Atlantic<\/strong>, the Northeast<\/strong> faces an entirely different threat: oppressive heat<\/strong>. Nearly 30 million people<\/strong> across Philadelphia<\/strong>, Boston<\/strong>, Hartford<\/strong>, Albany<\/strong>, Rochester<\/strong>, and Burlington<\/strong> are under heat alerts<\/strong>. Daytime highs<\/strong> are soaring into the upper 80s and 90s<\/strong> (about 31\u201337\u00b0C<\/strong>), with the heat index<\/strong> peaking near 100\u00b0F<\/strong> (38\u00b0C<\/strong>) in parts of Philadelphia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Despite extreme weather nationwide, Texas<\/strong> remains at the center of national concern<\/strong>. By Monday afternoon<\/strong>, at least 90 people<\/strong> had been confirmed dead from the holiday weekend storms<\/strong>. Flash flood warnings<\/strong> went out overnight<\/strong>, when most people were asleep and less likely to respond<\/strong>, adding to the danger.<\/p>\n In Hill Country<\/strong>, where some of the worst flooding was recorded, more than 20 inches<\/strong> (over 50 cm<\/strong>) of rain fell between Thursday night and Friday<\/strong>, overwhelming the terrain. On Saturday<\/strong>, stalled thunderstorms led to flash flood emergencies<\/strong>.
