Warnings extend through <strong>7 p.m. CT<\/strong>, covering a wide swath including <strong>Austin<\/strong>, <strong>San Antonio<\/strong>, <strong>Kerrville<\/strong>, <strong>Killeen<\/strong>, <strong>Brady<\/strong>, <strong>Fredericksburg<\/strong> and <strong>Uvalde<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Early on <strong>Monday morning<\/strong>, <strong>slow-moving thunderstorms<\/strong> had already begun sweeping through parts of these communities. But forecasters warned the worst may not yet be over. Through the rest of the day, an <strong>additional 2 to 4 inches of rain<\/strong> (about <strong>5 to 10 cm<\/strong>) is expected to fall across already <strong>saturated ground<\/strong>, with some <strong>localized totals exceeding 6 inches<\/strong> (more than <strong>15 cm<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conditions may begin to improve by Tuesday<\/strong>, as the <strong>moisture-laden weather system<\/strong> slowly starts shifting eastward.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Hunt<\/strong>, along the <strong>banks of the Guadalupe River<\/strong>, recovery efforts are underway after a <strong>flash flood<\/strong> tore through <strong>Camp Mystic<\/strong> on <strong>Sunday<\/strong>, forcing campers to evacuate swiftly. <strong>Images captured<\/strong> residents removing <strong>soaked bedding<\/strong> and belongings amid muddy waters and debris.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Tropical Storm Chantal lashes North Carolina before weakening<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>While <strong>Texas<\/strong> battles rising waters, other parts of the <strong>U.S.<\/strong> are also under threat. <strong>Tropical Storm Chantal<\/strong> brought torrential rain to <strong>North Carolina<\/strong> on <strong>Sunday<\/strong>, with some areas near <strong>Chapel Hill<\/strong> receiving more than <strong>10 inches<\/strong> (over <strong>25 cm<\/strong>) of rain. The <strong>Haw River<\/strong> at <strong>Bynum<\/strong> surged to nearly <strong>22 feet<\/strong>, setting a <strong>record crest<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chantal<\/strong> has now weakened into a <strong>post-tropical cyclone<\/strong>, but it continues to move <strong>northward<\/strong>, bringing the threat of <strong>flash flooding<\/strong> to <strong>eastern Virginia<\/strong>, <strong>Maryland<\/strong>, <strong>Delaware<\/strong>, and <strong>northern New Jersey<\/strong>. Urban areas along the <strong>I-95 corridor<\/strong> are especially vulnerable to sudden, <strong>tropical downpours<\/strong>. In addition to rain, <strong>coastal communities<\/strong> from the <strong>Carolinas<\/strong> to the <strong>Delmarva Peninsula<\/strong> face <strong>strong surf<\/strong> and <strong>dangerous rip currents<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Northeast scorches under intense summer heat<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As rains soak the <strong>South<\/strong> and <strong>Mid-Atlantic<\/strong>, the <strong>Northeast<\/strong> faces an entirely different threat: <strong>oppressive heat<\/strong>. Nearly <strong>30 million people<\/strong> across <strong>Philadelphia<\/strong>, <strong>Boston<\/strong>, <strong>Hartford<\/strong>, <strong>Albany<\/strong>, <strong>Rochester<\/strong>, and <strong>Burlington<\/strong> are under <strong>heat alerts<\/strong>. <strong>Daytime highs<\/strong> are soaring into the <strong>upper 80s and 90s<\/strong> (about <strong>31\u201337\u00b0C<\/strong>), with the <strong>heat index<\/strong> peaking near <strong>100\u00b0F<\/strong> (<strong>38\u00b0C<\/strong>) in parts of <strong>Philadelphia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Focus remains on Texas as death toll climbs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Despite extreme weather nationwide, <strong>Texas<\/strong> remains at the <strong>center of national concern<\/strong>. By <strong>Monday afternoon<\/strong>, at least <strong>90 people<\/strong> had been confirmed dead from the <strong>holiday weekend storms<\/strong>. <strong>Flash flood warnings<\/strong> went out <strong>overnight<\/strong>, when most people were asleep and <strong>less likely to respond<\/strong>, adding to the danger.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Hill Country<\/strong>, where some of the worst flooding was recorded, <strong>more than 20 inches<\/strong> (over <strong>50 cm<\/strong>) of rain fell between <strong>Thursday night and Friday<\/strong>, overwhelming the terrain. On <strong>Saturday<\/strong>, stalled thunderstorms led to <strong>flash flood emergencies<\/strong>. Swollen waterways and flash runoff created <strong>sudden, deep surges<\/strong> of water \u2014 in some cases reaching <strong>2 feet<\/strong> (<strong>60 cm<\/strong>) in height.<\/p>\n<p>The devastation recalls memories of <strong>Hurricane Harvey<\/strong> in <strong>2017<\/strong>, which hovered over <strong>Houston<\/strong> and surrounding areas for days, dumping <strong>nearly 50 inches<\/strong> (more than <strong>125 cm<\/strong>) of rain and causing <strong>billions of dollars in damage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Flood watches remain in effect this Monday, July 7, 2025, across much of Central Texas, following deadly storms that devastated parts of the region over the holiday weekend.
