The storm front<\/strong>, which first reached northwestern Iowa<\/strong> around 7 p.m. Monday<\/strong>, tracked southeastward overnight<\/strong>, bringing with it gusty winds up to 60 mph<\/strong>, small hail<\/strong>, and intense lightning activity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n In the heart of Des Moines<\/strong>, 0.87 inches (22.1 mm)<\/strong> of rain were recorded on July 8<\/strong>, according to data from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet<\/strong>. The overnight storms<\/strong> were accompanied by sharp thunderclaps<\/strong>, frequent lightning<\/strong>, and high winds<\/strong>, creating a volatile mix<\/strong> across the metro area<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Just north of the city, in Ankeny<\/strong>, the rainfall was considerably heavier, reaching 1.97 inches (50.0 mm)<\/strong> during the same period, making it one of the wettest locations<\/strong> in central Iowa<\/strong> that night. To the north, Ames<\/strong> received only 0.12 inches (3.0 mm)<\/strong>, showing how localized<\/strong> the heavier downpours were.<\/p>\n From 8 a.m. Monday, July 7<\/strong>, through 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 8<\/strong>, the heaviest rain totals<\/strong> across Iowa<\/strong> came from a few specific locations.
