IDAHO FALLS<\/strong> \u2014 A red flag warning<\/strong> is now in effect for much of Southern<\/strong> and Eastern Idaho<\/strong>, replacing the previous fire weather watch<\/strong>, as critical fire conditions<\/strong> are expected to escalate on Wednesday afternoon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The National Weather Service in Pocatello<\/strong> upgraded the alert on Tuesday, July 8<\/strong>, and the warning will remain active from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Meteorologist Jack Messick<\/strong>, speaking to EastIdahoNews.com<\/strong>, explained that the switch from watch to warning signals greater confidence<\/strong> that dangerous fire weather<\/strong> is imminent within the next 24 to 30 hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n This escalation is tied to a combination of very low humidity<\/strong>, high wind gusts<\/strong>, and critically dry fuels<\/strong>. Forecasts show wind speeds<\/strong> between 25 and 30 mph<\/strong>, while humidity levels<\/strong> are expected to drop below 15%<\/strong>\u2014especially across Eastern Idaho<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n A dry cold front<\/strong> is expected to move through the region, causing wind intensity to spike. Messick noted this front will likely impact areas west of Interstate 15<\/strong>, especially rural zones<\/strong>, though the danger remains widespread.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cAll it takes is one ignition point<\/strong>,\u201d said Messick. \u201cWith winds blowing from the southwest<\/strong>, fire could easily spread across large sections of Idaho<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Recent fire activity highlights this risk. The Garden Creek Fire<\/strong>, located near Fort Hall<\/strong>, ignited even without<\/strong> any warning in effect. The blaze, which began last week, burned through 5,418 acres<\/strong> before it was declared fully contained<\/strong> on Monday<\/strong>, according to the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes\u2019 Tribal Office of Emergency Management<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n During the Fourth of July weekend<\/strong>, fire crews across Eastern Idaho<\/strong> responded to 22 separate fire incidents<\/strong>, several of which were linked to fireworks<\/strong>. In Idaho Falls<\/strong>, one wildfire scorched over 20 acres<\/strong>, also believed to be firework-related<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Additional hazards loom with the possibility of dry thunderstorms<\/strong>, which could further spark wildfires. Burn bans remain in place across Bannock<\/strong>, Bingham<\/strong>, Caribou<\/strong>, Bear Lake<\/strong>, and Oneida Counties<\/strong>. These bans prohibit open burning<\/strong> and the use of fireworks<\/strong>, although campfires and gas or charcoal grills<\/strong> are currently exempt<\/strong>, provided they’re monitored closely.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Messick is urging residents not to use fireworks on Wednesday<\/strong>. \u201cYou’ve got to be careful about where your fireworks land<\/strong>,\u201d he warned.
