Ciudad de M\u00e9xico<\/strong>, Wednesday, July 9, 2025<\/strong> \u2013 A broad and complex weather system<\/strong> is setting the stage for intense rainfall<\/strong> across large swaths of northern<\/strong>, northwestern<\/strong>, and central Mexico<\/strong> between Thursday, July 10<\/strong>, and Saturday, July 12<\/strong>. The National Meteorological Service (SMN)<\/strong> has issued an official alert<\/strong> regarding several overlapping phenomena expected to bring severe thunderstorms<\/strong>, hail<\/strong>, gusty winds<\/strong>, and localized flooding<\/strong>.<\/p>\n On Thursday, July 10<\/strong>, heavy to very heavy downpours<\/strong> will dominate the weather across Sonora<\/strong>, Chihuahua<\/strong>, Durango<\/strong>, Sinaloa<\/strong>, Nayarit<\/strong>, and Jalisco<\/strong>, with expected rainfall amounts between 2 and 3 inches<\/strong> (50\u201375 mm). The tropical wave number 10<\/strong>, moving across the western part of the country<\/strong>, will be the main driver of this moisture surge, enhanced by the Mexican monsoon<\/strong> currently active over the northwest<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Other regions, including San Luis Potos\u00ed<\/strong>, Zacatecas<\/strong>, Aguascalientes<\/strong>, Guanajuato<\/strong>, Estado de M\u00e9xico<\/strong>, Puebla<\/strong>, Michoac\u00e1n<\/strong>, Colima<\/strong>, Guerrero<\/strong>, Oaxaca<\/strong>, Chiapas<\/strong>, and Veracruz<\/strong>, will see scattered thunderstorms with localized heavy rain<\/strong>, measuring around 1 to 2 inches<\/strong> (25\u201350 mm).<\/p>\n Lighter showers<\/strong> are expected across Coahuila<\/strong>, Nuevo Le\u00f3n<\/strong>, Tamaulipas<\/strong>, and most of the Yucat\u00e1n Peninsula<\/strong>, with rainfall totals under 1 inch<\/strong> (5\u201325 mm). Baja California<\/strong> and Baja California Sur<\/strong> will see only spotty light rain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Winds will intensify<\/strong> Thursday afternoon, especially along the Gulf of California<\/strong> and in Sonora<\/strong>, Chihuahua<\/strong>, and Coahuila<\/strong>, where gusts could reach up to 45 mph<\/strong> (70 km\/h). Dust storms are possible in Baja California<\/strong> and Baja California Sur<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Temperatures will remain high<\/strong>, particularly in Baja California<\/strong> and Sonora<\/strong>, where the mercury could top 113\u00b0F (45\u00b0C)<\/strong>. Most of northern Mexico<\/strong>, including Chihuahua<\/strong>, is forecast to reach 104\u2013113\u00b0F (40\u201345\u00b0C)<\/strong>, while coastal<\/strong> and southern states<\/strong> like Michoac\u00e1n<\/strong>, Guerrero<\/strong>, and Oaxaca<\/strong> could see highs in the mid to upper 90s\u00b0F (35\u201340\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n On Friday, July 11<\/strong>, the heaviest rainfall<\/strong> will focus on northeastern Sonora<\/strong> and western Chihuahua<\/strong>, where localized totals could exceed 6 inches (150 mm)<\/strong>. The interaction between the Mexican monsoon<\/strong>, upper-level cyclonic circulation<\/strong>, and tropical moisture<\/strong> from the Pacific and Gulf of Mexico<\/strong> will drive these extreme weather conditions.<\/p>\n Hidalgo<\/strong>, Estado de M\u00e9xico<\/strong>, Tlaxcala<\/strong>, Puebla<\/strong>, and Veracruz<\/strong> will also experience very heavy rain<\/strong>, with daily accumulations up to 3 inches (75 mm)<\/strong>, increasing the risk of flash floods<\/strong> and mudslides<\/strong>, particularly in mountainous terrain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n A wide band stretching from Nuevo Le\u00f3n<\/strong> to Chiapas<\/strong> will be affected by strong showers and scattered storms<\/strong>, with rainfall estimates between 1 and 2 inches<\/strong> (25\u201350 mm). These storms may be accompanied by hail<\/strong> and frequent lightning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Winds<\/strong> will remain strong in Sonora<\/strong>, Chihuahua<\/strong>, Coahuila<\/strong>, and along the Gulf Coast<\/strong>, with gusts between 40 and 45 mph (65\u201370 km\/h)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n High temperatures will persist, especially across northeastern Baja California<\/strong> and northern Sonora<\/strong>, where highs will again exceed 113\u00b0F (45\u00b0C)<\/strong>. Southern states<\/strong> like Oaxaca<\/strong>, Campeche<\/strong>, and Yucat\u00e1n<\/strong> are likely to see highs around 95\u2013104\u00b0F (35\u201340\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n By Saturday, July 12<\/strong>, northeastern Sonora<\/strong> remains under the threat of intense rainfall<\/strong>, with totals again exceeding 6 inches (150 mm)<\/strong> in isolated areas. Chihuahua<\/strong>, Coahuila<\/strong>, Durango<\/strong>, Sinaloa<\/strong>, Puebla<\/strong>, and Veracruz<\/strong> are also set to receive very heavy rainfall<\/strong> between 2 and 3 inches (50\u201375 mm)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n A second tropical wave<\/strong>, number 11, moving into the Yucat\u00e1n Peninsula<\/strong>, will bring increased storm activity<\/strong> to Quintana Roo<\/strong>, Campeche<\/strong>, and Yucat\u00e1n<\/strong>, although rainfall will remain more moderate than in the northwest<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Thunderstorms with heavy downpours<\/strong> will blanket much of central Mexico<\/strong>, from Jalisco<\/strong> and Colima<\/strong> to Ciudad de M\u00e9xico<\/strong> and Oaxaca<\/strong>, with storm totals reaching 1 to 2 inches (25\u201350 mm)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Baja California<\/strong> and Baja California Sur<\/strong> will continue to see minimal precipitation<\/strong>, though dusty conditions<\/strong> are possible due to wind gusts up to 45 mph (70 km\/h)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Temperatures will again soar in northeastern Baja California<\/strong> and parts of Sonora<\/strong>, Baja California Sur<\/strong>, and Chihuahua<\/strong>, where highs may surpass 113\u00b0F (45\u00b0C)<\/strong>.
