This past June 2025<\/strong> marked the third-warmest globally<\/strong>, continuing a worrying trend of unrelenting global heat<\/strong>, primarily fueled by greenhouse gas emissions<\/strong>. The hottest June on record<\/strong> prior to this was in 2024<\/strong>, followed closely by 2023<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Extreme heat hits Western Europe with historic intensity<\/strong><\/h3>\n

According to Copernicus<\/strong>, temperatures across Western Europe<\/strong> climbed to extraordinary levels<\/strong>, with daytime highs exceeding 104\u00b0F (40\u00b0C)<\/strong> in several areas. Spain<\/strong> and Portugal<\/strong> saw peaks nearing 114.8\u00b0F (46\u00b0C)<\/strong>, pushing the limits of human heat tolerance<\/strong> and driving millions into high heat stress<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The heat came in two main waves<\/strong>: the first from June 17 to 22<\/strong>, and the second from June 30 to July 2<\/strong>, both fueled by heat domes<\/strong>\u2014meteorological phenomena that trap warm air in place, leading to prolonged scorching conditions<\/strong>. These domes exacerbated air pollution<\/strong> and wildfire risks<\/strong>, especially across southern France<\/strong>, northern Italy<\/strong>, and the Balkans<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In areas just north of Lisbon<\/strong>, the “feels-like” temperatures\u2014factoring in humidity\u2014spiked to a staggering 118.4\u00b0F (48\u00b0C)<\/strong>, which is 7\u00b0C above average<\/strong>, signaling extreme heat stress<\/strong> for the human body.<\/p>\n

Western Mediterranean Sea at record-breaking warmth<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Adding to the regional heat crisis, sea surface temperatures<\/strong> in the western Mediterranean<\/strong> soared to an all-time high<\/strong> of 80.6\u00b0F (27\u00b0C)<\/strong> on June 30<\/strong>, which was nearly 9\u00b0F (5\u00b0C)<\/strong> above average in several zones. The unusually warm waters slowed overnight cooling<\/strong>, intensified coastal humidity<\/strong>, and disrupted marine ecosystems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

According to Samantha Burgess<\/strong>, Strategic Lead for Climate at Copernicus<\/strong>, these marine temperatures “intensified the heatwave impact,” particularly around coastal Europe<\/strong>, turning entire cities into heat traps<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Heat, wildfires, and floods: a month of global extremes<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The June heatwaves<\/strong> weren’t limited to Europe<\/strong>. Data compiled by AFP<\/strong> using Copernicus records<\/strong> show that at least 12 countries<\/strong> and approximately 790 million people<\/strong> globally were affected by record-breaking temperatures<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the United States<\/strong>, dangerous levels of heat struck multiple states, while China<\/strong> saw 102 weather stations<\/strong> report their hottest-ever June day<\/strong>, with some registering over 104\u00b0F (40\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The month also saw devastating wildfires<\/strong> across Canada<\/strong> and southern Europe<\/strong>, and deadly floods<\/strong> in parts of South Africa<\/strong>, China<\/strong>, and Pakistan<\/strong>. In contrast, Western Europe<\/strong> experienced drier-than-average conditions, contributing to increased wildfire risks<\/strong>, while the southern United States<\/strong>, southern Brazil<\/strong>, and parts of China<\/strong> saw unseasonably heavy rainfall<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Warming planet crosses critical thresholds<\/strong><\/h3>\n

June\u2019s temperature was 2.3\u00b0F (1.3\u00b0C)<\/strong> above pre-industrial levels<\/strong>, a stark reminder of how close the Earth is<\/strong> to breaching the 1.5\u00b0C warming threshold<\/strong> set by the Paris climate agreement<\/strong>. That target was meant to limit the long-term impact<\/strong> of global warming, but according to current trends, scientists now warn that crossing that boundary before 2030<\/strong> is increasingly inevitable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
