Long Island<\/strong> is in for a hot and humid Wednesday<\/strong>, with the heat index<\/strong> climbing into the upper 90s (around 36\u00b0C)<\/strong>, driven by intense humidity. The National Weather Service<\/strong> is warning of isolated showers<\/strong> and the potential for thunderstorms<\/strong> beginning this afternoon<\/strong>, continuing through early Thursday<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Bryan Ramsey<\/strong>, meteorologist with the National Weather Service<\/strong>, noted that today’s rainfall<\/strong> will be more scattered<\/strong> than Tuesday’s widespread showers<\/strong>. While much of the day will be dry, heavier downpours<\/strong> and stronger isolated storms<\/strong> are possible, particularly after 8 p.m.<\/strong>, with storm chances increasing significantly after 2 a.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n According to Ramsey, “there\u2019s still going to be a marginal risk for some of the heavy downpours and flash flooding.”<\/strong> These conditions are partly due to residual moisture<\/strong> from Tropical Storm Chantal<\/strong>, which, while no longer a direct threat, continues to influence atmospheric instability<\/strong> over the region.<\/p>\n Heavy rainfall<\/strong> has prompted Nassau County<\/strong> health officials to close 14 beaches<\/strong> to swimming as a precaution against stormwater runoff<\/strong>, which could lead to elevated bacteria levels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Closed beaches include: Suffolk County<\/strong> issued a bathing advisory<\/strong> affecting 28 additional beaches<\/strong>, mainly along the Long Island Sound<\/strong> and several others in Cold Spring Harbor<\/strong>, Huntington Harbor and Bay<\/strong>, Centerport Harbor<\/strong>, Northport Harbor and Bay<\/strong>, and Smithtown<\/strong>. The advisory stems from concerns that runoff may cause bacteria levels<\/strong> to exceed New York State health standards<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Officials<\/strong> warn that elevated bacteria<\/strong> in stormwater runoff can affect swimming safety<\/strong> and may pose health risks, especially after intense rainfall<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Despite recent storms, Long Island<\/strong> continues to face a rainfall deficit<\/strong>. For example, MacArthur Airport<\/strong> recorded only 1.88 inches (about 4.8 cm)<\/strong> of rain in June<\/strong>, while the monthly average<\/strong> is closer to 4 inches (10.2 cm)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n On Wednesday<\/strong>, Nassau County<\/strong> saw roughly \u00bc inch of rain<\/strong>, while Suffolk County<\/strong> received isolated pockets of \u00bd to 1 inch<\/strong> (1.3 to 2.5 cm), though totals were generally lower.<\/p>\n Since January 1<\/strong>, Long Island<\/strong> has accumulated 19.06 inches (48.4 cm)<\/strong> of precipitation. Ramsey stated, “Yesterday aside, we are slightly below average, but not significantly.”<\/strong><\/p>\n Looking ahead, temperatures<\/strong> will hover in the mid to upper 80s (around 29\u201331\u00b0C)<\/strong> through the rest of the week, with daily chances for afternoon thunderstorms<\/strong>.
