Forecasters are keeping a close watch on the northeastern Gulf of Mexico<\/strong>, where a low potential exists for tropical development<\/strong> next week \u2014 particularly between July 15 and 18<\/strong>, according to AccuWeather<\/strong> and the National Hurricane Center (NHC)<\/strong>. While conditions across the Atlantic Basin<\/strong> remain mostly quiet for now, attention is shifting closer to home, in the same region where Tropical Storm Chantal<\/strong> formed earlier this month.<\/p>\n Meteorologists say the odds are low, but not zero, that a tropical depression<\/strong> or a weak tropical storm<\/strong> could form early next week either just off the Southeast coast<\/strong> or in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico<\/strong>.<\/p>\n “It\u2019s the same general area where we were watching Chantal,” said Alex DaSilva<\/strong>, lead hurricane expert at AccuWeather<\/strong>. “There\u2019s a front sagging south that could create just enough spin for something to form, though wind shear might get in the way.”<\/p>\n Right now, African dust<\/strong> and strong upper-level winds<\/strong> \u2014 two classic storm killers \u2014 are still dominating much of the tropical Atlantic<\/strong>, making it tough for any system to really get going. Still, if something does form, it’s unlikely to become a hurricane. “It wouldn’t have enough time or favorable conditions to reach that strength,” DaSilva said. “More likely, it would be a depression or a minimal tropical storm.”<\/p>\n If a system were to develop east of Florida<\/strong>, it could drift north<\/strong> toward the Southeast U.S. coast<\/strong>, guided by steering winds. If it develops on the Gulf side<\/strong>, it could get nudged westward<\/strong>, skimming the northern Gulf Coast<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Even if a defined storm center doesn\u2019t materialize, Florida\u2019s coastline<\/strong> could still see an uptick in showers<\/strong>, thunderstorms<\/strong>, and rough seas<\/strong> as early as next week. And if a center does<\/em> form? That would likely bring heavier rain<\/strong>, gusty winds<\/strong>, and increased surf<\/strong>, especially along the Panhandle<\/strong> and Southwest coast<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The National Hurricane Center<\/strong> is currently monitoring four tropical waves<\/strong> across the Atlantic basin<\/strong>, all slowly marching westward:<\/p>\n One is just off the African coast<\/strong>, while another has reached near 38W<\/strong> longitude, bringing scattered showers along its path. A third is passing through the eastern Caribbean<\/strong>, though it\u2019s quiet for now. The fourth, moving through the southwestern Caribbean<\/strong>, is generating some thunderstorms between 80W and 85W<\/strong>.<\/p>\n None of these waves show signs of organized development at the moment \u2014 largely due to a widespread layer of Saharan dust<\/strong> drifting off Africa<\/strong> and continuing to suppress convection.<\/p>\n So far this season, we\u2019ve seen three named storms: Andrea<\/strong> (June 24), Barry<\/strong> (June 29), and Chantal<\/strong> (July 5). The next name on the list is Dexter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Climatologically, the first hurricane<\/strong> tends to form around August 11<\/strong>, and the next named storm usually shows up by August 15<\/strong>, so the season is still ramping up.<\/p>\n Across Florida<\/strong>, it\u2019s another steamy day<\/strong>, with highs in the low to mid-90s<\/strong> and heat index values<\/strong> soaring into the triple digits. In Southwest Florida<\/strong>, it could feel as hot as 107\u00b0F (41.7\u00b0C)<\/strong> at peak heating.<\/p>\n Afternoon storms<\/strong> will develop across much of the state, especially inland and along the Gulf coast<\/strong>. Some areas, particularly near Tallahassee<\/strong> and into South Georgia<\/strong>, could see stronger storms<\/strong> than usual.<\/p>\n Here\u2019s a snapshot of today\u2019s conditions around the state:<\/p>\n In Pensacola<\/strong>, scattered storms will bubble up by late afternoon, with highs in the low 90s<\/strong>. The Atlantic hurricane season<\/strong> runs through November 30<\/strong>, with peak activity<\/strong> typically hitting around September 10<\/strong>. So far, the season has been tracking close to average, but forecasters urge continued vigilance<\/strong>, especially as we approach the heart of the season in August and September<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The full list of 2025 storm names includes Andrea, Barry, Chantal, Dexter, Erin, Fernand, Gabrielle<\/strong>, and others \u2014 ending with Wendy<\/strong>.
