Afternoon forecast by meteorologist Matt Serwe<\/strong><\/p>\n Summer weather in Minnesota<\/strong> often comes with its share of surprises, and today is no exception. A batch of overnight storms<\/strong> has left behind a lingering low-pressure system<\/strong> across the region, and it\u2019s throwing a wrench into what had looked like a more straightforward forecast.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n That low is still spinning over parts of Minnesota<\/strong>, and under its influence, we\u2019ll see more showers and scattered storms<\/strong> developing this afternoon, especially from the Twin Cities<\/strong> stretching south and east<\/strong>. With thicker cloud cover and periods of rain, highs today will top out in the upper 70s to low 80s (77\u201383\u00b0F \/ 25\u201328\u00b0C)<\/strong> \u2014 cooler than a typical July<\/strong> afternoon.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Out west, it’s a different story. Western Minnesota<\/strong> will enjoy more sunshine<\/strong> and warmer temperatures<\/strong>, climbing into the low to mid 80s (82\u201385\u00b0F \/ 28\u201329\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n As we head into Thursday night<\/strong>, we\u2019re once again in wait-and-see mode. The question is where storms will pop up and how long they\u2019ll hang around through the morning hours. Because of today\u2019s rain, the warm front<\/strong> is being held farther to the south, so the storm focus<\/strong> shifts accordingly. Most of the action should remain south of the metro<\/strong>, but a few heavier showers<\/strong> could sneak into the southern Twin Cities<\/strong> early Friday morning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The rest of Friday<\/strong> looks more cooperative. Between the morning rain<\/strong> and the evening round of storms<\/strong>, there should be a clearer window<\/strong> for sunshine and warming<\/strong>, with highs pushing into the low to mid 80s (83\u201386\u00b0F \/ 28\u201330\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n But the break won\u2019t last long. Storms will redevelop late Friday<\/strong>, ahead of an incoming cold front<\/strong>. The Twin Cities<\/strong> should stay mostly dry through about 6:00 PM<\/strong>, but after that, the risk for thunderstorms<\/strong>, frequent lightning<\/strong>, and heavy rainfall<\/strong> increases.
