CHICAGO<\/strong> \u2014 A highly active weather pattern continues to impact the Chicago area<\/strong>, with rounds of heavy rain<\/strong>, humid air<\/strong>, and the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms<\/strong> expected to linger through the weekend.<\/p>\n More showers and thunderstorms<\/strong> are likely this morning<\/strong>, although the Flood Watch<\/strong>, originally set to expire at 7 a.m., was canceled early. Despite the early improvement, additional waves of storms<\/strong> are forecast to push through the region today, keeping conditions unsettled<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Ground stop lifted at O\u2019Hare Airport<\/strong><\/p>\n Thunderstorms earlier this morning triggered a ground stop<\/strong> at O\u2019Hare International Airport<\/strong>, according to the FAA<\/strong>. That restriction was lifted around 8:15 a.m.<\/strong>, but the impact on air travel was already felt. Over the past 24 hours, nearly 200 flights<\/strong> were canceled, and delays are currently averaging around 15 minutes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Rainfall totals vary across the region<\/strong><\/p>\n Rainfall over the past day has varied significantly. Parts of Northwest Indiana<\/strong> received only a few hundredths of an inch, while much of the metro area<\/strong> picked up around 1 inch<\/strong>. Heavier downpours soaked areas of northern Kane<\/strong>, northwestern DuPage<\/strong>, and southwestern McHenry counties<\/strong>, where 2.5 to 4.5 inches (6.3 to 11.4 cm)<\/strong> of rain have been reported. The Rockford area<\/strong> and northern Winnebago County<\/strong> recorded the highest totals.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Storm threat continues into Friday evening<\/strong><\/p>\n After a brief lull late this morning and early afternoon, the next round of thunderstorms<\/strong> is expected to develop by late afternoon<\/strong> and push through during the evening hours<\/strong>. Some of these storms could become severe<\/strong>, bringing heavy downpours<\/strong>, gusty winds<\/strong>, and potentially dangerous lightning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Highs today may stay a few degrees lower due to cloud cover and scattered showers<\/strong>, but the air will remain warm and muggy<\/strong>, with temperatures climbing into the mid to upper 80s (around 30\u00b0C\u201332\u00b0C)<\/strong>. Any storm activity should taper off late tonight<\/strong>, well after dark.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Looking ahead to the weekend<\/strong><\/p>\n Saturday may start off with a lingering morning shower<\/strong>, but attention shifts to the southern portion<\/strong> of the viewing area later in the day, where another round of storms<\/strong> could fire up.
