Unhealthy air from Canadian wildfires blankets Minnesota through Monday<\/strong><\/p>\n MINNESOTA<\/strong> \u2014 The entire state remains under an air quality alert<\/strong> through Monday morning<\/strong>, as smoke from Canadian wildfires<\/strong> continues to push into the region, bringing hazy skies<\/strong> and unhealthy air conditions<\/strong> that are expected to last through the weekend<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n According to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA)<\/strong>, air quality could reach the purple category<\/strong> \u2014 which signals very unhealthy conditions for everyone<\/strong> \u2014 especially in the northern half<\/strong> of the state. Areas like Duluth<\/strong>, Bemidji<\/strong>, and Ely<\/strong> are likely to experience the worst impacts, with particle levels climbing and visibility dropping.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n For the southern half of Minnesota<\/strong>, including the Twin Cities metro<\/strong>, air quality isn\u2019t expected to be quite as hazardous, but will still sit in the orange (unhealthy for sensitive groups)<\/strong> to red (unhealthy for everyone)<\/strong> range.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The MPCA says the first wave of smoke rolled into northwest Minnesota<\/strong> early Friday<\/strong>, with a second, denser plume arriving late in the evening. That second wave has since spread southeast, and by Saturday afternoon<\/strong>, nearly the entire state may be under a blanket of smoke.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re expecting the smoke to be widespread and persistent through the weekend,\u201d the agency said in a statement. \u201cConditions will vary depending on wind direction and the thickness of the smoke layers, but overall air quality is expected to remain poor across much of the state.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Relief is on the horizon, at least for some. Western Minnesota<\/strong> may start to see improvements by Sunday morning<\/strong>, as cleaner air<\/strong> moves in from the west. Still, northern Minnesota<\/strong> could get hit by yet another round of smoke by Sunday night<\/strong>, depending on how the upper-level winds shift.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Air Quality Index (AQI)<\/strong>, which ranges from green (good)<\/strong> to maroon (hazardous)<\/strong>, is currently showing elevated levels across most of Minnesota. Purple readings<\/strong> indicate conditions that can cause health problems even for those without preexisting issues.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Health officials are urging people to limit outdoor activities<\/strong>, especially children<\/strong>, older adults<\/strong>, and anyone with heart or lung conditions<\/strong>. Even for healthy individuals, long periods outdoors could lead to coughing, shortness of breath, or fatigue.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n On the ground, the smoke is already impacting travel.
