CHICAGO<\/strong> \u2013 A dangerous stretch of weather is unfolding across the Midwest<\/strong> this Friday<\/strong>, with severe thunderstorms expected to impact areas from southeastern Iowa<\/strong> to northern Illinois<\/strong> and parts of southern Wisconsin<\/strong>. Chicago<\/strong> and Milwaukee<\/strong> are both in the path of storms capable of producing damaging winds<\/strong>, large hail<\/strong>, and even a few tornadoes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Forecasters at the FOX Forecast Center<\/strong> have raised the tornado risk to a Level 3 out of 5<\/strong> across southeastern Iowa<\/strong>, including the Quad Cities<\/strong>, extending into far western Illinois<\/strong>. This is the area where conditions are most favorable for tornadic development<\/strong> late Friday evening. Meanwhile, Chicago<\/strong> remains under a Level 2 risk<\/strong>, meaning a few rotating storms<\/strong> could reach the city as the evening progresses.<\/p>\n The first storms are likely to develop by mid-to-late afternoon<\/strong>, forming as isolated supercells<\/strong> across northern Missouri<\/strong>, southern and eastern Iowa<\/strong>, and northern Illinois<\/strong>. These types of storms are notorious for producing large hail<\/strong> and brief tornadoes<\/strong>, especially during the early stages. Cities like Chicago<\/strong>, Rockford<\/strong>, and even parts of southern Wisconsin<\/strong> should be on alert through the early evening hours.<\/p>\n As the sun sets, these storms are expected to merge into larger clusters<\/strong>, spreading east and southeast with increasing risk for widespread damaging wind gusts<\/strong>. Forecast models suggest gusts could exceed 70 mph<\/strong>, enough to knock down trees and power lines.<\/p>\n Friday\u2019s atmosphere is loaded with energy. Temperatures in Chicago<\/strong> are topping out near 89\u00b0F (32\u00b0C)<\/strong>, and dew points in the low to mid-70s\u00b0F (21\u201324\u00b0C)<\/strong> are making the air feel thick and unstable \u2014 perfect fuel for storms. This combination of heat and moisture is creating the ideal setup for strong, fast-developing convection.<\/p>\n The risk doesn\u2019t end with Friday. By Saturday, July 12<\/strong>, the focus shifts east into the Great Lakes<\/strong>, including portions of Indiana<\/strong>, Michigan<\/strong>, and northeastern Illinois<\/strong>. The FOX Forecast Center<\/strong> has issued another Level 2 severe weather threat<\/strong> for the day, as a cold front<\/strong> and jet stream disturbance<\/strong> push through the region. Severe storms could once again develop during the afternoon and evening<\/strong>, with the potential for large hail<\/strong> and destructive wind gusts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Temperatures are expected to stay hot, with readings in the upper 80s to low 90s\u00b0F (31\u201333\u00b0C)<\/strong>. Combined with the lingering humidity, the environment will remain primed for dangerous storms.<\/p>\n In addition to the severe thunderstorm threat, flash flooding<\/strong> is becoming a growing concern. Repeated rounds of storms \u2014 especially those forming in quick succession \u2014 are likely to dump heavy rainfall<\/strong> over already saturated ground. A Level 2 out of 4 flash flood risk<\/strong> is now in effect from northern Missouri<\/strong> and Iowa<\/strong> through northern Illinois<\/strong>, including the Chicago metro area<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Some places have already been hit hard. On Thursday<\/strong>, more than 3 inches (76 mm)<\/strong> of rain fell in Rockport, Illinois<\/strong>, triggering a Flash Flood Warning<\/strong>.
