WICHITA, Kan. \u2014 After a quiet morning across the area, storm chances are once again back in the forecast for Wichita and much of south-central Kansas as we head into Friday evening. But before the rain arrives, it\u2019s the heat and humidity making headlines.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-90s\u00b0F (around 35\u00b0C)<\/strong> this afternoon under partly cloudy skies<\/strong>, with the heat index nearing 100\u00b0F (38\u00b0C)<\/strong>. It\u2019s going to feel especially sticky out there, thanks to strong southerly winds<\/strong> helping pull warm, moist air into the region.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n But relief is on the way\u2014though it may come with a bang.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n An unseasonably strong cold front<\/strong> will begin pushing across central Kansas<\/strong> late this afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms<\/strong> are likely to develop after 4 p.m.<\/strong>, eventually tracking southeast into the Wichita metro<\/strong> sometime after 6 p.m.<\/strong> Some of these storms could turn severe<\/strong>, with the main threats being damaging wind gusts and pockets of heavy rainfall<\/strong>. The best chance for stronger storms<\/strong> will be east of the Kansas Turnpike<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Winds will shift behind the front, bringing in cooler and drier air overnight. While a stray shower can\u2019t be ruled out early Saturday<\/strong>, most of the day will be dry and much cooler<\/strong>, with highs only reaching the low to mid-80s\u00b0F (28\u201329\u00b0C)<\/strong>\u2014well below average for mid-July<\/strong>. Skies will stay mostly cloudy, and northeast to east winds<\/strong> will keep things feeling noticeably more comfortable.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The cooler trend continues into Sunday<\/strong>, with morning lows dipping into the upper 60s\u00b0F (around 20\u00b0C)<\/strong> and highs rebounding to the upper 80s\u00b0F (31\u201332\u00b0C)<\/strong> under partly cloudy skies.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Looking into next week, temperatures begin to rise again<\/strong>, with highs in the low 90s\u00b0F (32\u201334\u00b0C)<\/strong> from Monday through Wednesday<\/strong>.
