DENVER \u2014 Friday, July 12, 2025<\/strong> \u2014 After a relatively quiet morning across the metro area, stormy weather is expected to return to Denver<\/strong> this afternoon, bringing with it the chance for strong winds, hail, and heavy rain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Denver7 meteorologists<\/strong> have issued a Weather Action Day<\/strong>, warning that some of the stronger storms developing later today<\/strong> could produce wind gusts up to 65 mph<\/strong>, quarter-size hail<\/strong>, and localized flooding<\/strong>, especially across parts of eastern Colorado<\/strong> and the Northern Front Range<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re watching for a few isolated storms to really ramp up between about 2 and 3 o\u2019clock this afternoon,\u201d said Denver7 Chief Meteorologist Lisa Hidalgo<\/strong>. \u201cThey\u2019ll likely form over the mountains first and then move east out across the plains. Some of them could get intense.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The good news: commuters in the Denver area<\/strong> may avoid the worst of the weather, with dry roads expected during the early evening drive<\/strong>. But Hidalgo added that storms will likely continue to fire up east of the city<\/strong> and move into the far eastern plains overnight<\/strong>, possibly creating some dramatic lightning displays<\/strong> and periods of heavy rain along I-70<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The National Weather Service office in Boulder<\/strong> echoed concerns over severe weather potential<\/strong>, saying the risk of tornadoes remains low<\/strong>, but strong winds and flooding<\/strong> are definite possibilities as the evening unfolds.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n A flood watch<\/strong> has been issued starting at 6 p.m.<\/strong> for parts of northeastern Colorado<\/strong>, including Logan, Morgan, northeastern Weld, Phillips, Sedgwick, and Washington counties<\/strong>. These areas could see localized downpours and flash flooding<\/strong> as storms roll through later tonight.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cSome storms will be capable of producing intense rainfall in a short amount of time,\u201d NWS forecasters said Friday. \u201cWe\u2019ll also be watching for strong outflow winds and small hail, with the highest flood threat east of the foothills and north of I-70.\u201d<\/p>\n The NWS is also advising extra caution on area lakes and reservoirs<\/strong>. Sudden outflow winds are common in thunderstorm conditions, and forecasters warned that anyone out on the water today could be caught off guard<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u201cIf you see clouds building on the horizon, it\u2019s best to head back to shore before storms arrive,\u201d the agency said in a statement Friday morning. \u201cStrong, gusty winds can arrive quickly, and they can be dangerous. Don\u2019t forget the life jackets.\u201d<\/p>\n Once today\u2019s storms move through, the Denver area should see a brief break Saturday morning<\/strong>, with another round of afternoon storms likely to form south of the city<\/strong>.
