Alabama<\/strong> is heading into a stretch of hot, humid days<\/strong> under the grip of what’s known in meteorological circles as a “dirty high”<\/strong>\u2014a twist on the typical high-pressure system that doesn\u2019t necessarily bring the clear skies and dry conditions many might expect.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Ordinarily, high pressure<\/strong> signals calm weather: sunshine, light winds, and few clouds. It\u2019s why forecasters often sum it up with the phrase \u201cbig bubble, no trouble.\u201d<\/strong> But this time, the atmosphere has something different in store.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n This weekend and into the early part of next week<\/strong>, a stubborn ridge of high pressure<\/strong> is forecast to build across the Southeast<\/strong>, but with it will come plenty of moisture<\/strong>, hazy skies<\/strong>, and scattered storms<\/strong>\u2014hence the term \u201cdirty.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n According to the National Weather Service<\/strong>, a dirty high<\/strong> is essentially a high-pressure system that\u2019s loaded with clouds and lingering moisture<\/strong>, often because of terrain influences, low-level saturation, or subtle lifting mechanisms embedded in the atmosphere. In simple terms, it\u2019s a high that doesn\u2019t clear things out<\/strong>. Instead, it traps humidity<\/strong> and creates just enough instability<\/strong> for daily showers and a few rumbles of thunder<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Forecasters in Huntsville<\/strong> noted in their Saturday morning discussion<\/strong> that despite high pressure dominating the setup, skies won\u2019t be crystal clear. Instead, expect a daily mix of clouds and sun<\/strong>, with 20 to 50 percent chances<\/strong> for pop-up storms<\/strong>, especially during the afternoon and early evening hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Daytime highs will stay firmly in the low to mid-90s\u00b0F (33\u201335\u00b0C)<\/strong> across much of the state, and heat index values<\/strong>\u2014what it actually feels like\u2014could push even higher with the thick humidity<\/strong> hanging in the air.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n There is a marginal risk (Level 1 of 5)<\/strong> for severe weather<\/strong> on Saturday<\/strong> across northern Alabama<\/strong>, but at this point, the rest of the week doesn\u2019t appear to pose any significant severe weather threats.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n So while Alabama<\/strong> remains under the influence of high pressure, this won\u2019t be the kind of dry, quiet pattern it usually brings.
