Florida braces for days of soaking rain, eyes on Gulf system<\/strong><\/p>\n FLORIDA<\/strong> \u2013 The Sunshine State<\/strong> won\u2019t be living up to its name next week. Instead of sun, much of Florida<\/strong> is gearing up for several days of steady rainfall<\/strong>, with the added possibility of tropical development<\/strong> as a weather system drifts toward the Gulf of Mexico<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The FOX Forecast Center<\/strong> is keeping close tabs on a weak, non-tropical low-pressure system<\/strong> that\u2019s expected to slide off the Southeast coast<\/strong>, cross over northern Florida<\/strong>, and move into the eastern Gulf<\/strong> by the second half of the week<\/strong>. The concern is not just how much rain it will dump across the state<\/strong>, but what it could become once it reaches the warm Gulf waters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Before the system even reaches the Gulf<\/strong>, it\u2019s likely to bring several rounds of heavy rain<\/strong> to central and southern Florida<\/strong>, especially beginning Sunday<\/strong> and ramping up into Monday<\/strong>. Forecast models suggest that some areas south of the I-4 corridor<\/strong> could see 3 to 5 inches<\/strong> (76 to 127 mm) of rain through the week \u2014 and possibly more where thunderstorms<\/strong> stall. In fact, some downpours could drop as much as 1 to 3 inches per hour<\/strong> (25 to 76 mm\/h), raising the risk of flash flooding<\/strong> in vulnerable spots.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Exactly where the worst flooding might occur won\u2019t become clear until closer to the event, but meteorologists are urging residents to stay weather-aware as the pattern develops.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Once the system reaches the Gulf of Mexico<\/strong>, that\u2019s when the tropical conversation begins. While current model guidance doesn\u2019t show a strong signal for rapid development, a few runs do suggest the system could take on some tropical characteristics<\/strong> by midweek<\/strong>, thanks to warm sea surface temperatures<\/strong> and enough moisture<\/strong> in the atmosphere to support it.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cYou\u2019ll notice a little cinnamon-bun-like swirl on some of the model charts moving across the peninsula into the Gulf,\u201d said FOX Weather meteorologist Michael Estime<\/strong>. \u201cThat\u2019s the mid-level spin we\u2019re watching.
