CARY, N.C. \u2014<\/strong> A large tree came crashing down Saturday night at the intersection of Melody Lane<\/strong> and Reedy Creek Road<\/strong> in Cary<\/strong>, as strong winds<\/strong> swept through Wake County<\/strong> during another round of severe summer storms.<\/p>\n According to the National Weather Service<\/strong>, the tree was uprooted by wind gusts, bringing multiple power lines<\/strong> down with it. It\u2019s still unclear how many homes in the area lost power, but cleanup crews were on the scene overnight working to remove the debris and assess the damage.<\/p>\n This is the second day in a row<\/strong> that a tree has fallen in the county. On Friday<\/strong>, a tree came down in a North Raleigh neighborhood<\/strong>, landing on a parked Tesla<\/strong>. While no injuries were reported in either case, meteorologists warn that conditions across central North Carolina<\/strong> are ripe for more incidents like these.<\/p>\n The culprit? Soaked soil<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Heavy rainfall from Tropical Depression Chantal<\/strong> earlier in the week left the ground saturated<\/strong>, and additional storms since then have only made matters worse. With soil unable to hold roots firmly in place, trees across the region are now more susceptible to falling\u2014especially when paired with even moderate winds.<\/p>\n \u201cThe trees have obviously been through a lot recently,\u201d said Basil Camu<\/strong>, a certified arborist with Leaf & Limb Tree Care<\/strong> in Raleigh<\/strong>. \u201cA precarious position and gravity have been working on them slowly throughout the day.\u201d<\/p>\n Camu explained that when tree roots are surrounded by overly wet soil, they lose their grip underground.
