Rochester, N.Y.<\/strong> \u2014 A flood watch<\/strong> is now in effect for a large portion of Upstate New York<\/strong>, with the National Weather Service<\/strong> warning of heavy rain and possible flash flooding<\/strong> throughout the day. The advisory, issued early Sunday, is set to remain active from 11 a.m. through late tonight<\/strong>, as slow-moving thunderstorms<\/strong> track across the region.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The watch covers a broad swath of the state, including Monroe<\/strong>, Wayne<\/strong>, Ontario<\/strong>, Livingston<\/strong>, Oswego<\/strong>, Allegany<\/strong>, Lewis<\/strong>, and Northern Cayuga counties<\/strong> in western and north-central New York<\/strong>, as well as Onondaga<\/strong>, Madison<\/strong>, Oneida (north and south)<\/strong>, Tompkins<\/strong>, Seneca<\/strong>, Schuyler<\/strong>, Steuben<\/strong>, Yates<\/strong>, and Southern Cayuga counties<\/strong> in central New York and the Southern Tier<\/strong>. Southern Herkimer County<\/strong>, in the Mohawk Valley<\/strong>, is also included in the alert.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Forecasters say the main concern is flash flooding<\/strong>, especially in low-lying areas<\/strong>, urban zones<\/strong>, and places with poor drainage<\/strong>. Rainfall rates could top 1 inch per hour<\/strong>, with multiple rounds of storms<\/strong> likely to develop throughout the day and into the evening.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The slow movement of these storm systems<\/strong> means some locations could see significant rainfall totals in a short amount of time, increasing the risk of quick-developing floods<\/strong> on streets, in basements, and across smaller creeks and streams.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Residents are urged to stay alert<\/strong> for updated forecasts and possible flash flood warnings<\/strong>.
