A <strong>cold front<\/strong> pushing in from the west is expected to trigger <strong>widespread showers and thunderstorms<\/strong> from the afternoon through the overnight hours. Some of these storms may stall over the same locations, producing heavy rainfall for extended periods.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Heavy rain and flash flood threat Monday into early Tuesday<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Rainfall rates could climb to <strong>1 to 2 inches per hour<\/strong>, with localized totals reaching <strong>2 to 4 inches (51\u2013102 mm)<\/strong> or more. This kind of <strong>tropical moisture<\/strong>\u2014combined with already <strong>saturated ground conditions<\/strong>\u2014sets the stage for <strong>urban and small stream flooding<\/strong>, especially in areas that see repeated rounds of storms.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>heaviest activity<\/strong> is expected to develop <strong>late Monday afternoon<\/strong> and continue into the evening and overnight. With rainfall potentially training over the same spots, the risk for <strong>flash flooding<\/strong> is notably higher.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Flash flood watch in effect for Philadelphia metro<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A <strong>Flash Flood Watch<\/strong> is in effect from <strong>2 p.m. to 11 p.m. Monday<\/strong> for much of the <strong>Philadelphia metro<\/strong>, stretching along the <strong>I-95 corridor<\/strong> and including portions of <strong>southeastern Pennsylvania<\/strong>, <strong>southern New Jersey<\/strong>, and <strong>Delaware<\/strong>. The <strong>Level 2 flood threat<\/strong> covers a densely populated swath of the region, raising concerns for the <strong>evening commute<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>With the ground unable to absorb much more moisture, <strong>rapid runoff<\/strong> could flood roads, low-lying intersections, and creeks. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads and never attempt to drive through standing water.<\/p>\n<p>Adding to the risks, <strong>weakened trees<\/strong> from previous rain events may topple, potentially leading to <strong>power outages<\/strong> or <strong>blocked roadways<\/strong>. While <strong>severe weather<\/strong> in terms of hail or tornadoes is unlikely, an <strong>isolated damaging wind gust<\/strong> cannot be ruled out.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Tuesday: stormy start, then gradual clearing<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Tuesday morning<\/strong> could start off with <strong>lingering storms<\/strong> and <strong>spotty flooding<\/strong>, particularly in areas hit hardest Monday night. However, skies will gradually become <strong>partly sunny<\/strong>, and temperatures will rise to the <strong>upper 80s\u00b0F (around 31\u00b0C)<\/strong>. Humidity levels will remain high, keeping conditions <strong>muggy and sticky<\/strong> throughout the day.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Typical summer pattern takes over midweek<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>From <strong>Wednesday<\/strong> through <strong>Friday<\/strong>, the region will shift into a <strong>more typical mid-July pattern<\/strong>, with <strong>partly sunny skies<\/strong> during the day and the daily risk of <strong>pop-up afternoon storms<\/strong>. Daytime highs will hover near the <strong>90\u00b0F (32\u00b0C)<\/strong> mark, with <strong>overnight lows<\/strong> holding in the <strong>mid-70s\u00b0F (around 24\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Expect <strong>high humidity levels<\/strong> to push <strong>heat index values<\/strong> close to <strong>100\u00b0F (38\u00b0C)<\/strong> during the peak of the afternoon.
