Another powerful heat dome<\/strong> is showing early signs of targeting Michigan<\/strong>, especially Southern Lower Michigan<\/strong>, during the last week of July<\/strong>. According to multiple medium-range weather models<\/strong>, including the ECMWF<\/strong> and the GFS<\/strong>, we may be heading into a hotter-than-average period<\/strong> just before the end of the month.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n For the third day in a row<\/strong>, both the European model (ECMWF)<\/strong> and the NOAA Global Forecast System (GFS)<\/strong> continue to highlight the development of a warm upper-air pattern<\/strong>. This signals the formation of what meteorologists call a “hot dome”<\/strong>\u2014a region where high pressure traps warm air<\/strong> aloft and drives up surface temperatures.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Starting around July 23<\/strong>, the ECMWF shows a shift in the wind flow at 15,000 feet<\/strong>, marking the beginning of this hot phase. While the intensity may not match the brutal heat wave of mid-June<\/strong>, when temperatures peaked at 99\u00b0F (37\u00b0C)<\/strong> in parts of Michigan<\/strong>, this round of late-July heat<\/strong> could still bring several days of 90\u00b0F+ (32\u00b0C+) highs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n If the pattern continues to evolve as predicted, Southern Lower Michigan<\/strong> could find itself under the influence of this dome for three to five days<\/strong>. Daily highs<\/strong> are currently projected to reach between 92\u00b0F and 95\u00b0F (33\u00b0C to 35\u00b0C)<\/strong>\u2014well above the seasonal average.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n This time of year\u2014the final days of July and the start of August<\/strong>\u2014is historically one of Michigan\u2019s warmest stretches<\/strong>, and current forecasts suggest that 2025 will be no exception<\/strong>.
