Tuesday, July 15<\/strong> is bringing another hot and humid<\/strong> summer day across Nebraska<\/strong>, but the evening hours<\/strong> carry an increasingly dangerous weather risk<\/strong>, especially across central Nebraska<\/strong>.<\/p>\n This morning<\/strong>, temperatures began in the upper 60s to low 70s\u00b0F<\/strong> (around 20\u201322\u00b0C<\/strong>), but will quickly climb back into the low to mid 90s\u00b0F<\/strong> (32\u201335\u00b0C<\/strong>) by this afternoon, especially along and south of I-80<\/strong>. The added humidity<\/strong> will push the heat index<\/strong> even higher, making it feel oppressively muggy<\/strong> in many locations.<\/p>\n The Storm Prediction Center<\/strong> has now raised the severe weather risk for central Nebraska<\/strong> to an Enhanced risk (Level 3 of 5)<\/strong>. The main concern is for damaging wind gusts<\/strong>, especially late this afternoon into the evening<\/strong>. Areas including and surrounding Kearney<\/strong>, Grand Island<\/strong>, and Broken Bow<\/strong> face the highest threat<\/strong>. Winds could exceed 75 mph<\/strong> (around 120 km\/h<\/strong>), with black hash marks<\/strong> on the latest maps indicating the potential for destructive straight-line winds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Farther southeast, including Lincoln<\/strong>, the risk level is Slight (Level 2 of 5)<\/strong>. However, by the time storms approach southeast Nebraska<\/strong> later Tuesday night<\/strong>, they are expected to weaken significantly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Alongside the wind hazard, there\u2019s a limited tornado risk<\/strong> across northern Nebraska<\/strong>. As storms interact with a cold front<\/strong>, conditions could support a brief, spin-up tornado<\/strong>, especially between Valentine<\/strong> and O\u2019Neill<\/strong> in the late afternoon to early evening<\/strong> hours.<\/p>\n The potential for hail<\/strong> is also present, particularly during the early stages<\/strong> of storm development over North Platte<\/strong> and into north-central Nebraska<\/strong>. As storms mature, the wind threat will dominate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n According to the latest Stormcast models<\/strong>, storms are expected to initiate in northwest Nebraska<\/strong> by late afternoon<\/strong>, then move southeastward<\/strong> through central Nebraska<\/strong> during the evening hours<\/strong>.
