Severe tropical rainstorm to impact southern Louisiana through the weekend<\/strong><\/p>\n A tropical rainstorm<\/strong> building along the north-central Gulf Coast<\/strong> is expected to deliver torrential rainfall<\/strong> to southern Louisiana<\/strong>, with a particular threat to the New Orleans metro area<\/strong>, through the rest of this week<\/strong> and into the weekend<\/strong>. Though the storm system remains disorganized, its capacity for dangerous flash flooding<\/strong> is significant.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n AccuWeather meteorologists<\/strong> emphasize that this storm, while not yet officially a tropical depression<\/strong> or tropical storm<\/strong>, is still set to unload relentless rain<\/strong> on areas such as New Orleans<\/strong>, where flooding infrastructure is vulnerable<\/strong> due to its below-sea-level<\/strong> elevation. By early Wednesday<\/strong>, the system\u2019s swirling winds<\/strong> were situated near Tallahassee, Florida<\/strong>, while most of the storm energy<\/strong> remained offshore over the warm Gulf waters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n “There\u2019s a narrow window for the system to strengthen into a tropical depression or tropical storm\u2014likely until midday Thursday,”<\/strong> stated Alex DaSilva<\/strong>, Lead Hurricane Expert<\/strong> at AccuWeather, on Wednesday morning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Even if the system doesn’t officially strengthen, the rainfall threat<\/strong> remains elevated. Weak steering winds<\/strong> are expected to drive the rainstorm westward across southern Louisiana<\/strong> on Thursday<\/strong>, with a stalling pattern possible<\/strong>. This stalling would intensify the rainfall over the same areas for an extended period, greatly increasing the flood risk.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n By Friday<\/strong> and continuing through the weekend<\/strong>, the system is projected to expand its reach into the lower and middle Mississippi Valley<\/strong>, bringing localized flash flooding<\/strong> to regions in Mississippi<\/strong> and possibly as far west as Houston, Texas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n A broad swath<\/strong> of southern Louisiana<\/strong> and southern Mississippi<\/strong> is forecast to receive 4 to 8 inches (100 to 200 mm)<\/strong> of rainfall, while isolated zones could see 8 to 12 inches (200 to 300 mm)<\/strong>. An AccuWeather Local StormMax\u2122<\/strong> of 16 inches (about 400 mm)<\/strong> is possible in the heaviest downpour zones<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Rainfall rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour<\/strong> are likely during peak bands of the storm, which will test the urban drainage systems<\/strong>, particularly in cities like New Orleans<\/strong>, which depends on large-capacity pumps<\/strong> to prevent accumulation on roads and in neighborhoods.
