Two of those areas \u2014 in <strong>Sauk County<\/strong> and <strong>Dodge County<\/strong> \u2014 are believed to have experienced <strong>confirmed tornado touchdowns<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>By <strong>7:00 p.m.<\/strong>, the <strong>tornado watch<\/strong> affecting the <strong>Milwaukee metro area<\/strong> had expired. However, the alert had covered a wide stretch of <strong>Southern and Eastern Wisconsin<\/strong>, including <strong>Milwaukee<\/strong>, <strong>Dane<\/strong>, <strong>Ozaukee<\/strong>, <strong>Waukesha<\/strong>, <strong>Kenosha<\/strong>, and <strong>Racine Counties<\/strong>, and extended as far north as <strong>Green Bay<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Tornado warnings escalated across central counties<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>More urgent <strong>tornado warnings<\/strong> were issued throughout the afternoon for multiple counties. A <strong>tornado sighting<\/strong>, roughly <strong>3 miles south of Waupun<\/strong>, triggered warnings in <strong>western Fond du Lac County<\/strong> and <strong>southeastern Dodge County<\/strong>, active until <strong>4:00 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>North central Columbia County<\/strong> and <strong>Marquette County<\/strong> remained under a tornado warning until <strong>3:45 p.m.<\/strong>, while portions of <strong>Columbia<\/strong>, <strong>Sauk<\/strong>, and <strong>Fond du Lac Counties<\/strong> were alerted until <strong>3:30 p.m.<\/strong>, following a severe thunderstorm observed near <strong>Lake Wisconsin<\/strong>, capable of spawning tornadoes.<\/p>\n<p>One of the first reported touchdowns occurred at <strong>1:12 p.m.<\/strong> over <strong>Mazomanie<\/strong>, located in <strong>Dane County<\/strong>, near <strong>Sauk City<\/strong>. That storm later weakened, but surrounding areas \u2014 including <strong>Dane<\/strong>, <strong>Rock<\/strong>, <strong>Green<\/strong>, and <strong>Jefferson Counties<\/strong> \u2014 faced tornado warnings throughout the early afternoon. The warning for <strong>Dane County<\/strong> was lifted by <strong>2:30 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>NWS teams to assess possible damage zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>Milwaukee NWS office in Sullivan<\/strong> confirmed that it will be focusing on <strong>10 areas<\/strong> that showed <strong>strong rotation signatures<\/strong> on the radar. While not all may have produced actual tornadoes, ground assessments will determine the extent of damage and confirm any additional touchdowns.<\/p>\n<p>Though <strong>Milwaukee<\/strong> saw <strong>less severe impact<\/strong>, rain lingered into the evening. Nevertheless, the <strong>forecast prompted event cancellations<\/strong>, including the <strong>Waukesha County Fair<\/strong>, which called off <strong>truck and tractor pulls<\/strong>, and the <strong>Milwaukee Night Market<\/strong>, which <strong>canceled its planned festivities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Understanding tornado watches and warnings<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A <strong>tornado watch<\/strong> does <strong>not mean<\/strong> a tornado has been observed \u2014 it indicates that <strong>atmospheric conditions<\/strong> could lead to tornado formation.
