NEW YORK, Thursday, July 17, 2025 (6:00 AM ET)<\/strong> \u2013 A tropical system<\/strong> moving across the Gulf of Mexico<\/strong> is expected to intensify over the next 24 to 48 hours and may soon become Tropical Storm Dexter<\/strong>, the fourth named storm<\/strong> of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season<\/strong>. As of this morning, the system is tracking westward through the Florida Panhandle<\/strong>, bringing increasing rain and storm activity to a broad swath of the Southeastern United States<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Florida<\/strong>, particularly the eastern coast<\/strong>, has already experienced intense thunderstorms<\/strong> and heavy rainfall<\/strong>, with localized totals ranging between 1 and 3 inches<\/strong> (25 to 76 mm). Areas including New Orleans<\/strong>, Mobile<\/strong>, Biloxi<\/strong>, and Gulfport<\/strong> fall under a level 2 flood risk<\/strong> for Thursday. On Friday<\/strong>, the threat escalates to level 3 of 4<\/strong> for portions of southeastern Louisiana<\/strong>, especially around Baton Rouge<\/strong>, due to concerns over prolonged rainfall<\/strong> and already saturated ground conditions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n According to the NHC<\/strong>, if the system remains over open waters<\/strong> long enough, it could strengthen and be named Dexter<\/strong>. Its development would likely occur near the northern Gulf coastline<\/strong>, an area historically prone to storm formation in July<\/strong> due to shallow, warm waters<\/strong> acting as storm fuel<\/strong>.
