High pressure finally settles over South-Central Texas<\/strong><\/p>\n A strong dome of high atmospheric pressure<\/strong> has taken hold over much of Texas<\/strong> this week, bringing a welcome pause<\/strong> to the relentless cycle of daily downpours<\/strong> that drenched the state during the first half of July<\/strong>. The sinking air<\/strong> associated with this pressure ridge helps suppress thunderstorm activity<\/strong>, creating a drier and more stable environment\u2014at least across South-Central Texas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n However<\/strong>, the eastern fringe of the state<\/strong> isn’t quite out of the woods. The National Hurricane Center<\/strong> is actively monitoring a low-pressure system<\/strong> lingering near the northern Gulf of Mexico coast<\/strong>. There\u2019s a moderate chance<\/strong> this system could develop into a tropical depression<\/strong> within the next 24 hours. Even if it doesn\u2019t organize further, it\u2019s still poised to send bands of tropical moisture<\/strong> into far East Texas<\/strong>, with heavy rainfall<\/strong> and potential flooding<\/strong> on the horizon.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n San Antonio forecast: Warm, dry and slightly cooler mornings<\/strong><\/p>\n As of Thursday morning<\/strong>, residents in San Antonio<\/strong> and the nearby Hill Country<\/strong> are experiencing slightly cooler pre-dawn temperatures<\/strong>. Expect early lows<\/strong> near 73\u00b0F (23\u00b0C)<\/strong> in San Antonio<\/strong>, with upper 60s\u00b0F (around 20\u00b0C)<\/strong> across Kerrville<\/strong>, Boerne<\/strong>, and other rural valleys from 6 to 8:30 a.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n By midday, temperatures<\/strong> will climb steadily under partly to mostly sunny skies<\/strong>, peaking around 95\u00b0F (35\u00b0C)<\/strong> by late afternoon. That reading is typical for mid-July<\/strong>, and no rainfall is expected today. San Antonio<\/strong>, the I-35 corridor<\/strong>, and the Hill Country<\/strong> will remain firmly under the influence of this dry, subsiding air mass<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Tropical rain targets East Texas by Thursday night<\/strong><\/p>\n Starting Thursday evening<\/strong>, especially after 7 p.m.<\/strong>, a plume of deep tropical moisture<\/strong> is expected to surge into Southeast Texas<\/strong>, driven by the disturbance in the Gulf<\/strong>. Whether or not this system is upgraded to Tropical Depression Dexter<\/strong> depends on whether its center tracks over open water or stays close to land. A path over water could allow it to strengthen<\/strong>, but significant development is less likely if it remains near the coast<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Regardless of classification, rain will fall<\/strong>. The heaviest amounts are expected between Thursday night and Friday<\/strong> across Beaumont<\/strong>, Port Arthur<\/strong>, and surrounding areas, where rainfall totals<\/strong> could reach 1 to 3 inches (25 to 75 mm)<\/strong>, with isolated pockets<\/strong> potentially collecting up to 5 inches (127 mm)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Further west, Lufkin<\/strong>, Houston<\/strong>, and Galveston<\/strong> are likely to receive 0.25 to 1 inch (6 to 25 mm)<\/strong> of rain. Meanwhile, this moisture won\u2019t make it far enough west<\/strong> to reach San Antonio<\/strong>. On Friday<\/strong>, the Alamo City<\/strong> may notice some extra cloud cover<\/strong>, but rain chances<\/strong> will hover around just 10%<\/strong>, with high temperatures slightly cooler, around 93 to 94\u00b0F (34 to 34.5\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n No triple-digit heat\u2014for now<\/strong><\/p>\n The high-pressure ridge<\/strong> over South-Central Texas<\/strong> is expected to persist<\/strong> through the weekend<\/strong> and into much of next week<\/strong>. While July<\/strong> often brings daily highs above 100\u00b0F (38\u00b0C)<\/strong>, this particular pattern isn\u2019t strong enough to produce extreme heat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n On Saturday<\/strong>, San Antonio<\/strong> will likely reach the mid-90s<\/strong>, followed by a high near 97\u00b0F (36\u00b0C)<\/strong> on Sunday<\/strong>. Morning lows<\/strong> will stay close to seasonal averages<\/strong>, between 75 and 77\u00b0F (24 to 25\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Next week, temperatures may tick slightly higher<\/strong>, but are still expected to remain just below the 100-degree mark<\/strong>. Forecasts from Monday through Wednesday<\/strong> show highs in the 97 to 99\u00b0F (36 to 37\u00b0C)<\/strong> range, under partly to mostly sunny skies<\/strong>.
