San Francisco and much of the Bay Area colder than usual<\/strong><\/p>\n SAN FRANCISCO<\/strong>, Wednesday, July 16<\/strong> \u2013 A thick layer of fog<\/strong> blanketed the downtown skyline<\/strong>, marking yet another cool and misty morning<\/strong> in what has become the coldest first half of summer<\/strong> in decades<\/strong> for the Bay Area<\/strong>.<\/p>\n So far, summer 2025<\/strong> has brought a rare reprieve from the scorching heat<\/strong> gripping much of the American West<\/strong>. Instead of triple-digit highs<\/strong>, many parts of Northern California<\/strong>\u2014especially along the coast\u2014have experienced well-below-average temperatures<\/strong>, persistent marine layers<\/strong>, and onshore winds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n San Francisco International Airport<\/strong> recorded an average maximum temperature<\/strong> of just 67.6\u00b0F (19.8\u00b0C)<\/strong> from June 1 through July 15<\/strong>\u2014the coldest such period<\/strong> since 1965<\/strong>. Elsewhere in the region, Oakland<\/strong>, Santa Rosa<\/strong>, and San Jose<\/strong> are also seeing cooler-than-normal conditions<\/strong>, even though they\u2019re slightly warmer than 2023<\/strong>, which started unusually cold before ending in a record-breaking heatwave<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Cool days outnumber warm ones in San Jose<\/strong><\/p>\n In San Jose<\/strong>, 38 out of the first 45 days<\/strong> of summer have been colder<\/strong> than during the same stretch in 2024<\/strong>. Last year\u2019s Independence Day<\/strong> hit a blistering 93\u00b0F (33.9\u00b0C)<\/strong>; this year, the thermometer barely reached 76\u00b0F (24.4\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The contrast with 2024<\/strong> couldn\u2019t be sharper. Just a year ago, July<\/strong> brought record-smashing temperatures<\/strong> across California<\/strong>, with Alameda<\/strong>, Contra Costa<\/strong>, Napa<\/strong>, Santa Clara<\/strong>, Solano<\/strong>, and Sonoma counties<\/strong> all logging their hottest month ever<\/strong>. Now, thanks to a lack of persistent high pressure<\/strong> in the upper atmosphere, the Bay Area<\/strong> has been spared that same fate\u2014so far.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Why it\u2019s been so cold<\/strong><\/p>\n Typically, hot and dry summers<\/strong> across the West<\/strong> are driven by strong, stubborn high-pressure systems<\/strong>, like the Four Corners high<\/strong> and the offshore Pacific high<\/strong>. But this year, those systems have remained stationary<\/strong>, allowing cool ocean breezes<\/strong> and onshore flow<\/strong> to dominate much of coastal Northern California<\/strong>.<\/p>\n According to meteorologist Heather Waldman<\/strong>, Northern California<\/strong> is currently sitting in a kind of “Goldilocks zone”<\/strong> of atmospheric balance\u2014neither too hot nor too cold on a large scale, but consistently mild locally<\/strong> due to the absence of heat-building features in the upper atmosphere<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The role of climate change<\/strong><\/p>\n Unlike in 2023<\/strong>, when cool weather<\/strong> stretched across nearly all of California<\/strong> during the first half of summer, this year\u2019s chill is confined to the Bay Area<\/strong>. The rest of the Southwest<\/strong> is facing typical to above-normal heat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Yet, even in this unseasonably cool year, the long-term warming trend<\/strong> remains. From 1950 to 2005<\/strong>, the Bay Area<\/strong> warmed by about 1.7\u00b0F (0.9\u00b0C)<\/strong> on average.
