How rain has reshaped Iowa’s drought conditions<\/strong><\/p>\n Summer rain<\/strong> has become a steady and much-needed pattern<\/strong> across Iowa<\/strong>, bringing measurable relief<\/strong> to large parts of the state that had been suffering from dryness and drought<\/strong> for months. According to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor<\/strong>, released on Thursday, July 17<\/strong>, a remarkable 88% of Iowa<\/strong> is now completely free from any level of drought or abnormal dryness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Just a week earlier, on July 10<\/strong>, only 63%<\/strong> of the state was in the clear. That number has more than doubled<\/strong> since mid-May<\/strong>, when just 39% of Iowa<\/strong> showed no drought<\/strong> on the monitor.<\/p>\n Central<\/strong> and southwestern Iowa<\/strong> are among the most improved regions<\/strong>, thanks to consistent rainfall<\/strong> over the past few weeks. Meanwhile, western Iowa<\/strong>, which had long been the most drought-stricken<\/strong>, also saw substantial improvement<\/strong> in the latest update.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n What are the current drought classifications in Iowa?<\/strong><\/p>\n The Drought Monitor<\/strong> uses a five-level scale<\/strong> ranging from D0 (abnormally dry)<\/strong> to D4 (exceptional drought)<\/strong>. Under D0<\/strong>, crops like corn<\/strong> can begin to show stress<\/strong>, and under D1 to D2<\/strong> levels, ponds begin to shrink<\/strong> and soybeans may stop developing pods<\/strong>. None of those conditions are currently widespread, a positive shift for farmers<\/strong> and residents<\/strong> alike.<\/p>\n The newest map<\/strong>, reflecting data through the morning of July 15<\/strong>, shows that Iowa’s current growing season<\/strong> is faring much better<\/strong> than in recent years<\/strong>. By comparison, this time last year, 100% of the state<\/strong> had been drought-free, thanks to an exceptionally wet spring and early summer<\/strong>, which helped to end a four-year dry spell<\/strong>.<\/p>\n While not yet matching those 2023 conditions<\/strong>, this year’s trend is clearly moving in the right direction<\/strong>.
