According to the <strong>National Weather Service in Kansas City<\/strong>, an <strong>extreme heat warning<\/strong> remains in effect <strong>until 7 p.m. Thursday<\/strong>, covering <strong>east-central<\/strong> and <strong>northeast Kansas<\/strong>, and extending through <strong>central<\/strong>, <strong>north-central<\/strong>, and <strong>west-central Missouri<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Starting today, <strong>Monday, July 21<\/strong>, the region is locked into a <strong>hot and sticky pattern<\/strong> expected to last through <strong>midweek<\/strong>, with <strong>temperatures climbing into the upper 90s Fahrenheit (35-37\u00b0C)<\/strong>. <strong>Heat index values<\/strong>\u2014which combine air temperature and humidity\u2014are forecasted to <strong>spike between 100 and 110\u00b0F (38-43\u00b0C)<\/strong>. The <strong>highest heat index ever recorded<\/strong> in the city\u2014<strong>118.9\u00b0F (48.3\u00b0C)<\/strong>\u2014also occurred during that same week on <strong>August 21<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>longest heat wave on record<\/strong> for the city dates back to <strong>1936<\/strong>, when <strong>temperatures soared to 95\u00b0F or higher for 20 straight days<\/strong> from <strong>August 8 to August 27<\/strong>, a benchmark not yet matched.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although a <strong>cold front<\/strong> could brush the area later this week, potentially offering a <strong>brief break from the extreme heat<\/strong>, forecasters expect temperatures to <strong>rebound quickly over the weekend<\/strong>.
