\"Kansas-2107\"Kansas City<\/strong> is enduring its most intense heat wave since 2023<\/strong>, with dangerous temperatures<\/strong> and oppressive humidity<\/strong> lingering across the metro area<\/strong> and large portions of eastern Kansas<\/strong> and central Missouri<\/strong>. According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City<\/strong>, an extreme heat warning<\/strong> remains in effect until 7 p.m. Thursday<\/strong>, covering east-central<\/strong> and northeast Kansas<\/strong>, and extending through central<\/strong>, north-central<\/strong>, and west-central Missouri<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Starting today, Monday, July 21<\/strong>, the region is locked into a hot and sticky pattern<\/strong> expected to last through midweek<\/strong>, with temperatures climbing into the upper 90s Fahrenheit (35-37\u00b0C)<\/strong>. Heat index values<\/strong>\u2014which combine air temperature and humidity\u2014are forecasted to spike between 100 and 110\u00b0F (38-43\u00b0C)<\/strong>. The hottest period<\/strong> is likely to arrive between Tuesday and Thursday<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

What makes this heat wave especially dangerous<\/strong> is the lack of overnight relief<\/strong>. Lows are expected to stay above 75\u00b0F (24\u00b0C)<\/strong>, well above the seasonal average of 68\u00b0F (20\u00b0C)<\/strong>. The weather service<\/strong> warns that elevated overnight temperatures<\/strong> may prevent the human body from cooling properly, increasing the risk of heat-related illness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Right now, Kansas City\u2019s daytime temperatures<\/strong> are tracking well above normal<\/strong>. The historical average for this time of year sits around 89\u00b0F (32\u00b0C)<\/strong>, but the metro is instead facing a relentless string of days hovering in the mid to upper 90s (35-37\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This week\u2019s brutal heat echoes the historic heat streak of August 2023<\/strong>, when Kansas City<\/strong> experienced seven consecutive days<\/strong> with highs at or above 95\u00b0F (35\u00b0C)<\/strong>, peaking at 103\u00b0F (39\u00b0C)<\/strong>. The highest heat index ever recorded<\/strong> in the city\u2014118.9\u00b0F (48.3\u00b0C)<\/strong>\u2014also occurred during that same week on August 21<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The longest heat wave on record<\/strong> for the city dates back to 1936<\/strong>, when temperatures soared to 95\u00b0F or higher for 20 straight days<\/strong> from August 8 to August 27<\/strong>, a benchmark not yet matched.<\/p>\n

Although a cold front<\/strong> could brush the area later this week, potentially offering a brief break from the extreme heat<\/strong>, forecasters expect temperatures to rebound quickly over the weekend<\/strong>. There\u2019s also a chance of scattered showers and storms<\/strong>, especially across northern Missouri<\/strong>, which may help reduce the heat for some areas.<\/p>\n
