But the <strong>oppressive conditions<\/strong> are just beginning for parts of the <strong>Eastern U.S.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>first heat-related death of 2025<\/strong> has been confirmed in <strong>Dallas County, Texas<\/strong>, according to the county\u2019s <strong>Department of Health and Human Services<\/strong>. The victim was a <strong>man in his 60s<\/strong> with <strong>unspecified pre-existing medical conditions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Heat index values<\/strong> \u2014 which factor in <strong>humidity to show how hot it truly feels<\/strong> \u2014 climbed <strong>above 100\u00b0F (38\u00b0C)<\/strong> Thursday afternoon from the <strong>Gulf Coast<\/strong> all the way up through the <strong>Midwest<\/strong>, while in parts of the <strong>Mississippi Valley<\/strong>, they surged past <strong>110\u00b0F (43\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Memphis, Tennessee<\/strong>, recorded its <strong>hottest day of the year so far<\/strong> on <strong>Wednesday<\/strong>, with a high of <strong>97\u00b0F (36\u00b0C)<\/strong> and a heat index of at least <strong>106\u00b0F (41\u00b0C)<\/strong>. On <strong>Thursday<\/strong>, it felt even worse, with <strong>heat indices reaching 108\u00b0F (42\u00b0C)<\/strong>. Further south, <strong>Greenville, Mississippi<\/strong>, saw the <strong>heat index spike to 115\u00b0F (46\u00b0C)<\/strong>. Up north, <strong>Chicago<\/strong> felt over <strong>101\u00b0F (38\u00b0C)<\/strong>, and <strong>Syracuse, New York<\/strong>, shattered its previous daily high by hitting <strong>93\u00b0F (34\u00b0C)<\/strong> \u2014 surpassing a <strong>record set in 1941<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>scorching summer heat<\/strong> pushed <strong>eastward Thursday<\/strong>, spreading into the <strong>Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast<\/strong>. By afternoon, <strong>highs in the 90s\u00b0F (32\u00b0C)<\/strong> stretched as far north as <strong>Burlington, Vermont<\/strong>, just <strong>30 miles from the Canadian border<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>worst of the heat<\/strong> for the <strong>East Coast<\/strong> is arriving <strong>today, Friday<\/strong>, with temperatures expected to reach <strong>around 91\u00b0F (33\u00b0C)<\/strong> from <strong>Washington<\/strong> to <strong>Boston<\/strong>. These readings are <strong>well above seasonal norms<\/strong> and may <strong>break daily high-temperature records<\/strong> in <strong>Baltimore<\/strong>, <strong>Philadelphia<\/strong>, and <strong>New York City<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>heat index<\/strong> is projected to <strong>reach or exceed 100\u00b0F (38\u00b0C)<\/strong> across <strong>major cities<\/strong>. In <strong>Washington<\/strong> and <strong>Philadelphia<\/strong>, it could feel hotter than <strong>104\u00b0F (40\u00b0C)<\/strong> this afternoon, with <strong>Baltimore<\/strong> approaching a <strong>blistering 109\u00b0F (43\u00b0C)<\/strong> during peak hours.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Heat remains the deadliest form of extreme weather in the U.S.<\/strong> Worldwide, <strong>heat waves<\/strong> are becoming <strong>more frequent, intense, and long-lasting<\/strong> as the planet continues to warm due to <strong>climate change fueled by fossil fuel emissions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>More than <strong>90 million people<\/strong> across the <strong>Eastern half of the U.S.<\/strong> are currently under at least a <strong>Level 3 of 4 \u201cmajor heat risk\u201d alert<\/strong>, according to the <strong>National Weather Service<\/strong> \u2014 and that number is expected to <strong>rise again today<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)<\/strong> warns that such <strong>extreme temperatures<\/strong> pose serious risks to <strong>anyone without access to air conditioning or proper hydration<\/strong>, not just vulnerable populations. For those without <strong>cooling indoors<\/strong>, staying inside during <strong>peak heat hours<\/strong> could turn <strong>deadly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Adding to the danger, <strong>humid conditions<\/strong> are <strong>preventing overnight temperatures from dropping significantly<\/strong>. By <strong>Saturday morning<\/strong>, <strong>Washington<\/strong> is expected to remain around <strong>81\u00b0F (27\u00b0C)<\/strong> at dawn \u2014 nearly <strong>11\u00b0F (6\u00b0C)<\/strong> warmer than the average <strong>late July low<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When <strong>nighttime temperatures stay elevated<\/strong>, the <strong>body can\u2019t cool down<\/strong>, and the <strong>risk of heat-related illnesses increases sharply<\/strong>. Nighttime heat is also <strong>rising faster than daytime highs<\/strong>, becoming one of the <strong>clearest signs of climate change<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>Climate Central<\/strong> analysis indicates that <strong>human-driven climate change<\/strong> has made this week\u2019s <strong>heat wave at least three times more likely<\/strong> for nearly <strong>160 million Americans<\/strong> \u2014 almost <strong>half the country\u2019s population<\/strong> \u2014 compared to a world <strong>without fossil fuel pollution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>heat dome<\/strong> will <strong>start to weaken by Saturday<\/strong>, giving way to <strong>more typical \u2014 yet still hot \u2014 late-July conditions<\/strong> in parts of the <strong>Northeast and Midwest<\/strong>.
