A powerful thunderstorm<\/strong> struck Greeley<\/strong> and Evans<\/strong> late Thursday afternoon<\/strong>, pelting the area with hail<\/strong> and a sudden downpour<\/strong> that startled many residents. The first hailstones began falling around 4:00 p.m.<\/strong>, marking the start of a turbulent weather episode across a compact zone of Weld County<\/strong>, stretching from south of Lucerne<\/strong>, through Greeley<\/strong>, and down toward LaSalle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n According to the National Weather Service in Boulder<\/strong>, the hail\u2014classified as graupel<\/strong>\u2014reached the size of a quarter<\/strong>, causing immediate concern for damage to roofs<\/strong>, vehicle exteriors<\/strong>, and tree limbs<\/strong>. Intense rainfall<\/strong> quickly followed, reducing visibility and leading to temporary flooding in some low-lying areas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The severe thunderstorm warning<\/strong> remained in effect until 4:45 p.m.<\/strong>, with wind gusts<\/strong> expected to reach speeds of 60 mph (96.5 km\/h)<\/strong>.
