According to <strong>SPP spokesperson Meghan Sever<\/strong>, this alert is tied directly to the <strong>persistent heat<\/strong>, but she clarified it does <strong>not mandate<\/strong> energy conservation from the public. Instead, it serves as a warning that <strong>high demand<\/strong> may stress the system.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kansas summers<\/strong> are no stranger to heat, but the <strong>recent surge<\/strong> has drawn particular attention. <strong>Kansas City meteorologist Joe Lauria<\/strong> took to <strong>Facebook<\/strong> to push back on what he called <strong>overuse of the word &#8220;extreme&#8221;<\/strong> when describing summer conditions. He reminded residents that <strong>90\u00b0 to 95\u00b0F (32\u00b0 to 35\u00b0C)<\/strong> days are <strong>normal<\/strong> for this time of year, and that <strong>heat indices<\/strong> in the <strong>100\u00b0 to 105\u00b0F (38\u00b0 to 41\u00b0C)<\/strong> range are to be expected.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Still, even <strong>&#8220;normal&#8221; heat<\/strong> puts <strong>strain on the grid<\/strong>. On <strong>Wednesday<\/strong>, <strong>Evergy<\/strong> activated parts of its <strong>demand response program<\/strong>, contacting <strong>residential<\/strong> and <strong>commercial customers<\/strong> who previously agreed to reduce their <strong>energy use<\/strong> during <strong>high-demand periods<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Courtney Lewis<\/strong>, spokesperson for <strong>Evergy<\/strong>, said the program allows <strong>businesses<\/strong> to participate by <strong>adjusting operations<\/strong> \u2014 this could mean <strong>raising thermostat settings<\/strong>, <strong>switching off non-essential lighting<\/strong>, or even <strong>relying on back-up power generators<\/strong> during <strong>critical hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Washburn University<\/strong>, a <strong>major energy user<\/strong> in <strong>Topeka<\/strong>, responded to the call by sending a campus-wide message urging faculty and staff to <strong>increase building thermostats<\/strong> from <strong>74\u00b0F to 80\u00b0F (23\u00b0C to 27\u00b0C)<\/strong> between <strong>2 and 6 p.m.<\/strong> on Wednesday. The university is part of <strong>Evergy\u2019s Generation Substitution Service<\/strong>, a special program for <strong>large customers<\/strong> in <strong>Kansas Central<\/strong>, allowing them to shift to <strong>on-site generation<\/strong> when needed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While customers in the program receive <strong>reduced rates<\/strong> for participating, <strong>Evergy CEO David Campbell<\/strong> admitted during a <strong>Kansas Corporation Commission<\/strong> hearing on Monday that some of the <strong>largest clients<\/strong> are not highly motivated to participate \u2014 even with <strong>financial incentives<\/strong>. \u201cThe number of times we need to activate these customers is still low,\u201d Campbell noted, \u201cbut the <strong>flexibility<\/strong> is critical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>seasonal forecast<\/strong> released earlier this summer warned of a <strong>40\u201360% probability<\/strong> of <strong>above-average temperatures<\/strong> throughout the <strong>SPP region<\/strong>, according to <strong>Meghan Sever<\/strong>.
