TOPEKA, Kansas<\/strong> \u2014 Soaring temperatures<\/strong> across Kansas<\/strong> this week are putting significant pressure<\/strong> on the region’s power grid<\/strong>, prompting Evergy<\/strong> to ask some of its customers<\/strong> to cut back on energy use<\/strong>, especially during peak hours.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Southwest Power Pool (SPP)<\/strong>, which coordinates the electricity grid<\/strong> across a multi-state region, issued a weather advisory<\/strong> from Tuesday through Thursday<\/strong>. According to SPP spokesperson Meghan Sever<\/strong>, this alert is tied directly to the persistent heat<\/strong>, but she clarified it does not mandate<\/strong> energy conservation from the public. Instead, it serves as a warning that high demand<\/strong> may stress the system.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Kansas summers<\/strong> are no stranger to heat, but the recent surge<\/strong> has drawn particular attention. Kansas City meteorologist Joe Lauria<\/strong> took to Facebook<\/strong> to push back on what he called overuse of the word “extreme”<\/strong> when describing summer conditions. He reminded residents that 90\u00b0 to 95\u00b0F (32\u00b0 to 35\u00b0C)<\/strong> days are normal<\/strong> for this time of year, and that heat indices<\/strong> in the 100\u00b0 to 105\u00b0F (38\u00b0 to 41\u00b0C)<\/strong> range are to be expected.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Still, even “normal” heat<\/strong> puts strain on the grid<\/strong>. On Wednesday<\/strong>, Evergy<\/strong> activated parts of its demand response program<\/strong>, contacting residential<\/strong> and commercial customers<\/strong> who previously agreed to reduce their energy use<\/strong> during high-demand periods<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Courtney Lewis<\/strong>, spokesperson for Evergy<\/strong>, said the program allows businesses<\/strong> to participate by adjusting operations<\/strong> \u2014 this could mean raising thermostat settings<\/strong>, switching off non-essential lighting<\/strong>, or even relying on back-up power generators<\/strong> during critical hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Washburn University<\/strong>, a major energy user<\/strong> in Topeka<\/strong>, responded to the call by sending a campus-wide message urging faculty and staff to increase building thermostats<\/strong> from 74\u00b0F to 80\u00b0F (23\u00b0C to 27\u00b0C)<\/strong> between 2 and 6 p.m.<\/strong> on Wednesday. The university is part of Evergy\u2019s Generation Substitution Service<\/strong>, a special program for large customers<\/strong> in Kansas Central<\/strong>, allowing them to shift to on-site generation<\/strong> when needed.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n While customers in the program receive reduced rates<\/strong> for participating, Evergy CEO David Campbell<\/strong> admitted during a Kansas Corporation Commission<\/strong> hearing on Monday that some of the largest clients<\/strong> are not highly motivated to participate \u2014 even with financial incentives<\/strong>. \u201cThe number of times we need to activate these customers is still low,\u201d Campbell noted, \u201cbut the flexibility<\/strong> is critical.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The seasonal forecast<\/strong> released earlier this summer warned of a 40\u201360% probability<\/strong> of above-average temperatures<\/strong> throughout the SPP region<\/strong>, according to Meghan Sever<\/strong>.
