What began as relief from the intense <strong>heat wave<\/strong> has quickly turned into a dangerous and disruptive weather emergency.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>NOAA\u2019s Weather Prediction Center<\/strong> has issued a <strong>Level 3 out of 4 risk<\/strong> for <strong>moderate flooding<\/strong> in parts of the region, with the <strong>Kansas City metro<\/strong> suffering <strong>historic rainfall<\/strong> that has already tied a <strong>125-year-old record<\/strong>. On <strong>Thursday<\/strong>, <strong>Kansas City<\/strong> registered <strong>2.35 inches (59.7 mm)<\/strong> of rain, and the skies are showing no signs of letting up.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Flash Flood Warnings<\/strong> are active across large swaths of <strong>Kansas<\/strong> and <strong>Missouri<\/strong>, with some extended until <strong>10 a.m. local time<\/strong>. <strong>MoDOT<\/strong> officials have reported <strong>water over sections of Interstate 70<\/strong>, triggering major <strong>traffic issues<\/strong>. Additional <strong>road closures<\/strong> include <strong>MO-78 east of I-435 in Jackson County<\/strong>, now completely <strong>blocked by floodwaters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>FOX Forecast Center<\/strong> warns that this is far from over. <strong>Heavy storms<\/strong> will continue throughout <strong>Friday<\/strong>, with <strong>strong winds<\/strong> and a <strong>nonstop deluge<\/strong> falling over areas that are already <strong>saturated<\/strong>. <strong>Interstate 49<\/strong> is also being heavily impacted, and <strong>local officials<\/strong> have strongly advised against <strong>non-essential travel<\/strong> before <strong>sunrise<\/strong>, labeling it a <strong>\u201cno travel zone.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meteorologists at the <strong>National Weather Service<\/strong> in <strong>Kansas City<\/strong> are forecasting <strong>isolated totals between 9 and 12 inches (22.8 to 30.4 cm)<\/strong> in the hardest-hit areas, while many neighborhoods have already seen <strong>3 to 4 inches (7.6 to 10.2 cm)<\/strong> dumped in less than <strong>24 hours<\/strong>. Rainfall rates in the most intense storms may exceed <strong>2 inches per hour (50.8 mm\/h)<\/strong>, particularly <strong>north of the I-70 corridor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Flood Watches remain active across counties in <strong>Kansas<\/strong>, <strong>Nebraska<\/strong>, and <strong>Missouri<\/strong>, as a <strong>slow-moving frontal boundary<\/strong> continues to drive this multi-day weather threat into <strong>early Saturday<\/strong>. According to <strong>FOX Weather\u2019s Stephen Morgan<\/strong>, the <strong>Pleasant Hill<\/strong> NWS office had already predicted a major flood event earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Authorities are on high alert. Just days ago, a <strong>62-year-old man<\/strong> was killed after being swept away near a <strong>flooded creek<\/strong> in <strong>Overland Park<\/strong>, southwest of <strong>Kansas City<\/strong>. The <strong>National Weather Service<\/strong> continues to stress that <strong>6 inches (15.2 cm)<\/strong> of moving water can knock over an adult, and <strong>just 12 inches (30.4 cm)<\/strong> is enough to carry away most vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While the current outbreak is not expected to reach <strong>severe weather criteria<\/strong>, a few stronger <strong>thunderstorm cells<\/strong> may produce <strong>damaging wind gusts<\/strong> or prompt brief <strong>Tornado Warnings<\/strong>, especially around the <strong>Topeka<\/strong> region. Rainfall totals there over the past two weeks are between <strong>300% and 600% above average<\/strong>, putting the area at extremely high risk for <strong>sudden flooding<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By the weekend, a shift in the pattern will bring <strong>a ridge of high pressure<\/strong> into the region.
