Kansas City<\/strong> is under siege from life-threatening flash floods<\/strong> this Friday morning<\/strong>, as a massive 1,000-mile-long storm system<\/strong> unloads relentless rain across the central United States<\/strong>, especially over northeast Kansas<\/strong> and northwest Missouri<\/strong>. What began as relief from the intense heat wave<\/strong> has quickly turned into a dangerous and disruptive weather emergency.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The NOAA\u2019s Weather Prediction Center<\/strong> has issued a Level 3 out of 4 risk<\/strong> for moderate flooding<\/strong> in parts of the region, with the Kansas City metro<\/strong> suffering historic rainfall<\/strong> that has already tied a 125-year-old record<\/strong>. On Thursday<\/strong>, Kansas City<\/strong> registered 2.35 inches (59.7 mm)<\/strong> of rain, and the skies are showing no signs of letting up.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Flash Flood Warnings<\/strong> are active across large swaths of Kansas<\/strong> and Missouri<\/strong>, with some extended until 10 a.m. local time<\/strong>. MoDOT<\/strong> officials have reported water over sections of Interstate 70<\/strong>, triggering major traffic issues<\/strong>. Additional road closures<\/strong> include MO-78 east of I-435 in Jackson County<\/strong>, now completely blocked by floodwaters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The FOX Forecast Center<\/strong> warns that this is far from over. Heavy storms<\/strong> will continue throughout Friday<\/strong>, with strong winds<\/strong> and a nonstop deluge<\/strong> falling over areas that are already saturated<\/strong>. Interstate 49<\/strong> is also being heavily impacted, and local officials<\/strong> have strongly advised against non-essential travel<\/strong> before sunrise<\/strong>, labeling it a \u201cno travel zone.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Meteorologists at the National Weather Service<\/strong> in Kansas City<\/strong> are forecasting isolated totals between 9 and 12 inches (22.8 to 30.4 cm)<\/strong> in the hardest-hit areas, while many neighborhoods have already seen 3 to 4 inches (7.6 to 10.2 cm)<\/strong> dumped in less than 24 hours<\/strong>. According to FOX Weather\u2019s Stephen Morgan<\/strong>, the Pleasant Hill<\/strong> NWS office had already predicted a major flood event earlier this week.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Authorities are on high alert. Just days ago, a 62-year-old man<\/strong> was killed after being swept away near a flooded creek<\/strong> in Overland Park<\/strong>, southwest of Kansas City<\/strong>. The National Weather Service<\/strong> continues to stress that 6 inches (15.2 cm)<\/strong> of moving water can knock over an adult, and just 12 inches (30.4 cm)<\/strong> is enough to carry away most vehicles.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n While the current outbreak is not expected to reach severe weather criteria<\/strong>, a few stronger thunderstorm cells<\/strong> may produce damaging wind gusts<\/strong> or prompt brief Tornado Warnings<\/strong>, especially around the Topeka<\/strong> region. Rainfall totals there over the past two weeks are between 300% and 600% above average<\/strong>, putting the area at extremely high risk for sudden flooding<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n By the weekend, a shift in the pattern will bring a ridge of high pressure<\/strong> into the region.
