Friday, May 9, 2025 – Houston, Texas – A flash flood warning has been officially issued for central Harris County, where heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms are leading to rapidly deteriorating conditions.
National Weather Service radar indicates that intense rain bands are passing through the Houston metro area, especially affecting regions near downtown, the Heights, and Midtown. Roadways such as I-10, US-59, and Loop 610 are already experiencing hazardous driving conditions, with water collecting in low-lying areas and underpasses.
Authorities are urging residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. Urban flooding has already been reported along White Oak Bayou and Buffalo Bayou, with water levels rising quickly and posing a serious threat to pedestrians, drivers, and property in flood-prone neighborhoods.
Rainfall totals have already surpassed 2 inches (5 cm) in some central parts of the county, and additional precipitation of 1 to 3 inches (2.5 to 7.5 cm) is expected in the coming hours. The combination of saturated ground and ongoing rain significantly raises the risk of sudden flash flooding, particularly in concrete-heavy zones like Montrose, Third Ward, and East Downtown.
Meteorologists are advising continuous monitoring of local alerts, especially if you live near bayous, drainage ditches, or stormwater channels. Flash flooding can occur with little to no warning, and water can rise within minutes during heavy downpours.
